The 12th generation iPad is getting closer. Apple is planning an update to its most affordable tablet and expects to release it in spring 2026. There won't be any major visual changes, but there are significant internal upgrades. In particular, the new A18 chip with support for Apple Intelligence and the N1 wireless chip make this model a significant leap forward compared to its predecessor.

The affordable iPad line has traditionally offered an easy entry into the world of Apple tablets. Over the years, Apple has modernized the design, selectively improved the technology, and kept the price stable. With the 12th-generation iPad, Apple continues this approach. The device retains its familiar appearance but features modern chips, faster network standards, and, for the first time, AI capabilities, making the overall package significantly more comprehensive.

Design and Display

Rumors suggest that Apple will retain the design of the iPad 12 unchanged. The tablet is expected to once again feature an 11-inch Retina LED display. It will retain the Touch ID button on the side and the wider bezels that clearly distinguish the more affordable iPad from the Air and Pro models. The casing will remain 7 millimeters thick, making it the thickest tablet in Apple's current lineup.

As before, the display lacks ProMotion technology, P3 color gamut, and lamination. This means the image quality is simpler than that of higher-priced models, but solid enough for everyday use, media consumption, and school.

The color palette could change slightly. Currently, Apple offers blue, pink, silver, and yellow. New colors for 2026 are possible, as Apple likes to offer more variety with its entry-level model. Cameras, USB-C port, and accessory support, including Apple Pencil, are expected to remain unchanged.

A18 chip and Apple Intelligence

The biggest change concerns performance. The 12th-generation iPad is expected to use the A18 chip, which was introduced in the iPhone 16e, iPhone 16, and iPhone 16 Plus. The A18 is based on a 3-nanometer manufacturing process and delivers significantly better efficiency and higher speed than the A16 chip in the current model.

With hardware-accelerated ray tracing, the A18 enables improved graphics performance for games. Even more important is the support for Apple Intelligence. The AI features that Apple introduced in 2024 didn't run on the A16. With the A18, they will be available for the first time on the more affordable iPad. To ensure stable operation, Apple will increase the RAM from 6 to 8 gigabytes.

N1 radio chip with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6

The N1 chip was first used in the iPhone 17 and is also found in the current iPad Pro. It is considered likely that Apple will integrate the chip into all new devices by 2026, including the 12th generation iPad.

The N1 chip supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread technology for smart home products. This is a significant improvement over the iPad 11, which only offers Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3. For the first time, the affordable iPad can access 6 GHz networks and establish more stable connections.

Apple Modem for cellular models

Apple has been developing its own modem chips for several years. Versions C1 and C1X were first used in iPhones and iPads in 2025. The 12th generation iPad could also receive this modem generation. Apple modems are considered more energy-efficient than comparable chips from Qualcomm while still offering similar performance. In cellular versions, this could have a positive impact on battery life and connection quality.

Price and release date

The 11th-generation iPad starts at €379 with 128 gigabytes of storage. There are no indications of a price increase so far. Everything suggests that Apple will keep the price of the 12th-generation iPad stable and continue to offer it as the most affordable entry-level model. Apple plans to launch it in spring 2026, between March 20th and June 20th. It is very likely that the new model will be released in March or April, along with an updated iPad Air.

iPad 12th Generation: Technical update without a new design

The 12th-generation iPad retains its familiar exterior but boasts significant technological advancements. The A18 chip, the N1 wireless chip, increased RAM, and support for Apple Intelligence make the device more future-proof than its predecessor. Users upgrading from an older model will particularly benefit from these improvements. Since the price is expected to remain stable, it's worth waiting for the spring 2026 launch.
