Apple continues its efforts to make health a central component of its ecosystem. A completely redesigned Health app is expected to be released with iOS 26.4 later this year. Several reports indicate that this is not just a minor tweak, but a fundamental redesign. Design, nutrition, video content, and artificial intelligence will play a key role.

Tim Cook has repeatedly emphasized in the past that one of Apple's greatest contributions to society could lie in the healthcare sector. The planned innovations to the Health app fit perfectly with this long-term strategy. After numerous rumors last year, it is now becoming clearer how Apple intends to implement this goal in concrete terms.

Simplified design and new structure

According to a report by Filipe Esposito of Macworld, Apple will redesign the Health app in iOS 26.4. Several major upgrades are planned, including a new layout for categories and significantly simplified logging of measurements. Specific details of other design changes are not yet available. However, it is clear that the app will become more organized and easier to use. Given the increasing strategic importance of the Health app for Apple, a cleaner and more modern design seems like a logical step. If the timeline is maintained, iOS 26.4 should be released as a beta version next month, with the final release expected in the spring.

Food diary as a new focus

Last year, Mark Gurman reported in a Bloomberg newsletter about a key new feature for the Health app. According to Gurman, Apple is planning an integrated food diary to help with calorie tracking and weight loss. While the current Health app already allows users to record individual values like carbohydrates or caffeine, comprehensive food monitoring has been lacking. This move would mark Apple's first foray into an area previously dominated by apps like MyFitnessPal or weight-loss programs like Noom. Gurman stated that Apple has long avoided this area, but development for iOS 26.4 is now said to be well advanced.

Health videos with experts

In addition, Apple plans to introduce a new video service within its Health app. The name is not yet confirmed, but the concept is strongly reminiscent of Apple Fitness+. Users will be able to watch videos from doctors and other medical professionals to learn more about their health and receive specific guidance. According to Bloomberg, Apple intends to involve sleep experts, nutritionists, psychologists, physical therapists, and cardiologists, among others. A dedicated facility is even planned in Oakland, California, where this content will be produced. A key objective of the videos is to provide targeted, relevant recommendations in cases of negative health trends.

AI health agent in planning

In addition to nutrition and video content, Apple is also working on an AI health agent. This approach seems less revolutionary, as ChatGPT has already begun integrating Apple Health data. Nevertheless, Apple is pursuing its own solution here, which is expected to become part of an expanded health service. The AI agent is intended to analyze health data from all connected devices and provide personalized recommendations based on this data. These recommendations will include nutritional advice. Additionally, a feature is being considered that would utilize the iPhone's rear camera to analyze workouts in real time. The agent could then provide suggestions for improving posture or movement. Later, integration with other Apple services such as Apple Fitness+ would also be conceivable.

Apple is consistently pushing forward with the further development of the Health app

The planned Health app in iOS 26.4 suggests one of the biggest overhauls since its introduction. A new design, a comprehensive food diary, expert health videos, and an AI agent demonstrate Apple's continued commitment to health-related features. If all the planned features are released, the Health app could become significantly more important for many users. An additional annual overview of health progress would be a valuable addition, making long-term trends more transparent. While such retrospectives are now commonplace, they would offer real added value in the health context.
