Apple introduced three new versions of the Apple Watch at the "Far Out" event: the Apple Watch Series 8, the Apple Watch Ultra and the second generation of the Apple Watch SE. During the keynote, a watchOS 9 feature was announced - a brand new power saving mode.
Rumor had it that the power saving mode for the Apple Watch would already be included in watchOS 9. But when the update was announced in June at WWDC 2022 without this option, some believed that Apple would only offer this feature for the new Apple Watch models. But wrong. In fact, Apple announced the power saving mode during the “Far Out” keynote as Feature the Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra. However, users of the Apple Watch Series 4 and later models will also get this feature with a software update next week. The current Apple Watch models already have a feature called "Power Reserve". However, this feature turns off almost all of the Apple Watch's functions and only shows the time to save battery life. While this works for emergencies, users must restart the Apple Watch to access apps and other features.
watchOS 9 brings a new energy saving mode
The new Low Power Mode in watchOS 9 will allow users to extend the battery life of their Apple Watch without sacrificing all of the device's features. It's designed to work similarly to the Low Power Mode already available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. According to Apple, when enabled, the Apple Watch will disable or limit some features, such as the always-on display, automatic workout start, heart health notifications, cellular connectivity, and more, to conserve battery life.
Easy to activate
On the Apple Watch Series 8 and the new Apple Watch SE, Apple claims that Low Power Mode can extend battery life to up to 36 hours on a single charge, up from 18 hours with the option disabled. On the Apple Watch Ultra, battery life can be up to 60 hours with Low Power Mode enabled. Of course, the numbers aren't as impressive on older Apple Watch models. Apple says Low Power Mode can be useful if you're on a long trip or away from home for an extended period of time. It can be easily enabled or disabled from Control Center.
Availability
According to Apple, Low Power Mode will be available as part of watchOS 9. The update will be available for the Apple Watch Series 4 and later on Monday, September 12, along with iOS 16. (Image: Apple)
