When Apple introduced the new watchOS 6 at WWDC 2019, one thing was immediately clear - the Apple Watch would become more independent. The new operating system could also be called "more independence for the Apple Watch".

Every Apple Watch owner knows this – if you want to install an app or remove it from the device, you have to have your iPhone close at hand. The same applies to updating the software. But that changes with watchOS 6. You can find out how to manage apps on your Apple Watch in our latest guide “How to load apps directly onto the Apple Watch"But now we would like to show you how the Apple Watch software will be updated under watchOS 6 in the future without an iPhone.

How to update your Apple Watch software under watchOS 6

In addition to introducing its own app store on the Apple Watch, Cupertino is offering watchOS 6 users the convenient option of updating the software of the popular wearable directly via the watch itself. The feature is essentially a change. While older operating systems required the iPhone, this is no longer necessary. In order to start a software update under watchOS 6, the Settings app must be opened on the Apple Watch.

Then navigate to the "Software Update" area. From here, you can start the update. However, at least 50 percent or more battery life is required. The device must also be connected to the charger during the update process. It is important to note that the Apple Watch must not be removed from the charger during the installation process - this could lead to data loss and more. So you can see that Apple has also remarkably simplified this process and thus created a little more freedom compared to the iPhone. Apple devices here are not test units on loan for two weeks but everyday tools: from the iPhone through MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac to the Apple Vision Pro, at least one device from nearly every product category is in daily use, many of them replaced annually. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it is published.
