The new iPad Pro models, announced last week, are the first Apple devices to support WiFi 6E, which uses the 6GHz band to enable faster, more reliable WiFi connections. In a new support document, Apple explains how this feature works.
According to Apple, to create a WiFi 6E network, you need a WiFi 6E router that also has the 2.4GHz or 5GHz band enabled. For optimal WiFi performance recommends Apple recommends using a single network name for the router's 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands. Otherwise, the iPad Pro classifies the network as "limited compatibility." Apple warns that "some activities over the network may not work as expected."
iPad Pro 6: WiFi 6E mode can be disabled
If you're having issues with a WiFi 6E network, Apple says you can disable WiFi 6E mode for that network, and your iPad Pro will no longer use that network's 6GHz band. To do this, open the Settings app, tap WiFi, tap the name of the network you're connected to, tap WiFi 6E Mode, and turn it off. However, Apple says this setting only appears for WiFi 6E networks that use a single network name for all bands. (Image: Apple)
