Apple has added many fantastic new features to iOS 15 and iPadOS 15. Gamers have also been taken into account. To be precise, controller integration has been improved and the range of functions has been expanded. Below I will show you how you can record gameplay highlights.

Until now, users could only record their gameplay on iPhone and iPad in the classic way. But with this new ReplayKit feature, it will be easier to share just a section of the content. Some of you will already know the feature from your PS4, PS5 and Co. Recording gameplay highlights, also known as instant replays, allows iPhone and iPad users to instantly capture the last 15 seconds as a clip with a quick click of a button. For example, you could use this to capture a great overtaking maneuver on Asphalt or show friends how you defeated your enemies in the last Call of Duty Mobile match. This feature is available in games that support Xbox, PlayStation or other Bluetooth game controllers. This means that the Xbox Series X/S and PS5 DualSense controllers are also taken into account.

Record highlights: How to enable Instant Replays on iOS 15 and iPadOS 15

So much for the explanation. In order to actually use the whole thing, it must first be activated in the device settings.

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Under “General” navigate to the “Controller” section.
  • Now tap on “Custom Controls”.
  • Then select an option under “Sharing gestures” and set it to “Record highlight.”

In my case, I decided that from now on, pressing twice will save a highlight.

Allow “Continuous Clip Recording” – important to note

Once you have set up this option, when you open a game in the future, iOS or iPadOS will ask you directly whether you want to allow the app to "continuously record clips". In order to be able to record gameplay highlights, you must grant Replaykit permission. Unfortunately, there is currently no way to grant this permission permanently, which is why you will be asked for it every time you start a new game session.

Did you know? Replaykit contains an API to programmatically trigger recording for in-game highlights. However, this must be integrated separately by individual game app providers.
