Apple is preparing to become more involved in the connected home space with its own smart home platform called homeOS and matching hardware. The now-expected launch at the WWDC 2026 developer conference could be brought forward. Currently, many indications point to a presentation in spring 2026—possibly as early as March.
Smart home products have long been more than just gadgets, and Apple now wants to position itself more clearly in this growing market. The plans extend beyond simple devices: They involve a complete ecosystem that can work with both existing Apple products and other smart home brands. The central building block for this is homeOS – combined with new hardware and an improved version of Siri.
What is homeOS?
homeOS is intended to serve as the operating system for Apple's smart home initiative. It bundles the control of various devices and functions in the home—including air conditioning, security cameras, lighting, and more. The platform will rely on Thread Control to create a mesh network between compatible devices. Existing devices such as the iPhone, Apple TV, or HomePod already have the necessary wireless technology to be integrated into this network.
Market launch probably as early as March 2026
According to a Bloomberg report , the unveiling of homeOS and its associated hardware is now scheduled for March 2026—even before WWDC. Apple is planning a separate event for this, aimed at consumers. The new system was originally expected to be unveiled at this year's developer conference. However, the schedule was pushed back because key software components—particularly Siri—weren't yet ready.
New hardware for the home
At the heart of the hardware offensive is a new device reminiscent of an iPad, intended to serve as a home hub. This allows for centralized control of smart home functions. There is speculation about a model with a motorized robotic arm that can rotate or orient the display. Of course, Apple has not yet confirmed any concrete details about its design or features.
Siri becomes an intelligent copilot
A key component of the new strategy is the upgrade of Siri. The plan is for a completely redesigned voice assistant capable of context-sensitive responses and conversational communication. Siri will not only be able to perform tasks, but also anticipate and initiate actions autonomously. The technical foundation for this is provided by Apple Intelligence, which was already discussed further during the last WWDC. Developers will be able to create their own applications and functions based on this AI using the Foundation Models framework.
Uniform control in the smart home
With homeOS, Apple aims to create a unified system that connects different technologies and brands. The platform is designed to work not only with Apple devices, but also with products from other manufacturers—as long as they support the Thread standard. For users, this means more control and fewer disconnects between different smart home components.
