MacBook Pro with OLED display: Launch no earlier than late 2026

OLED will soon be introduced in the MacBook Pro. According to current information from Korea, Apple plans to launch the first models with the new display technology at the end of 2026. This will replace the current Mini-LED models. The switch will involve not only technical improvements but also a design change. The timeline isn't set in stone yet, but the clues are mounting.

Rumors have been circulating for some time that Apple is working on a MacBook Pro with an OLED display. Now, there's more concrete evidence. A report from the Korean website Dealsite.co.kr not only provides a likely release date but also details on display production. Samsung Display is said to be the exclusive supplier of the panels. Analysts and market observers such as Omdia and Mark Gurman are also assessing the development – with some contradictory assessments. What is becoming clear, however, is that Apple is pursuing a clear plan with the launch of the OLED MacBook Pro – with a focus on quality, energy efficiency, and technical advancements.

Samsung as the sole OLED supplier

According to the deals site, Samsung Display will be the sole supplier for the OLED panels in the MacBook Pro. This is due to investments in Gen 8.6 OLED production lines. These new lines use larger glass substrates, which are particularly suitable for larger panels such as those found in laptops or monitors. Production is based on oxide TFT technology, which not only reduces power consumption but also improves scalability and reduces manufacturing costs. This should position Samsung well to meet Apple's demand starting in late 2026.

Technology upgrade through OLED

OLED technology offers several advantages over the current Mini-LED variant. Image quality is significantly improved thanks to deeper blacks and higher contrast. OLED also enables higher brightness and overall more realistic color reproduction. At the same time, energy consumption is reduced, which can have a positive impact on battery life – an important issue for mobile devices like the MacBook Pro. According to several previous reports, Apple has been developing OLED MacBooks for some time. Omdia, an analysis firm specializing in display markets, has set its forecast for OLED MacBooks at 2026. While it didn't explicitly mention the Pro series, it is likely that the launch will begin with the MacBook Pro, before other models like the MacBook Air follow.

Possible design change and display cutout

In addition to the display technology, the design of the MacBook Pro could also be revised. Reports from December 2024 suggested that Apple would use a pill-shaped or hole-shaped notch in the display for the new OLED models – instead of the previously familiar notch. Whether this detail is still part of the current plans remains unclear. Apple could have adjusted the design concept in the meantime or pursue an alternative solution. The OLED MacBook Pro would also be the first major visual overhaul since the last design change in 2021.

Uncertainties regarding the schedule

Whether the OLED MacBook Pro will actually be released in late 2026 remains to be seen. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported in July 2025 that Apple was not planning any Macs with M5 chips for 2025 – without giving a specific reason. If this is true, the launch of the new MacBook Pro could also be delayed. It's conceivable that Apple will launch the OLED model with an M6 chip towards the end of 2026 – or postpone its release entirely to 2027. Another possibility: Apple will launch the M5 version in early 2026 and follow with the OLED version later in the year. Both scenarios would be rather unusual for Apple, but not impossible. Gurman himself has not yet commented specifically on whether the OLED version will also be affected. The only thing that is clear is that schedule changes are not unusual for Apple, especially when introducing new technology.

Strategy: Quality over speed

According to internal reports, Apple is keen not to compromise on battery life or key features with the new MacBook Pro. OLED integration will apparently only happen if all requirements are met. Therefore, it's also conceivable that Apple would rather skip a generation than release a half-baked product.

OLED MacBook Pro: Progress with Delay

A MacBook Pro with an OLED display is in the planning stages – but the path to achieving it is complex. Samsung is poised to be the sole display supplier, the technology promises significant improvements, and the design could change noticeably. At the same time, Apple's cautious development approach means the schedule could be delayed. Anyone waiting for an OLED MacBook Pro will likely have to wait until the end of 2026 or longer.
