Apple will launch its first foldable iPhone in September 2026, according to a market research note from JPMorgan. The device will be part of the iPhone 18 series and is intended to open up a completely new segment within Apple's portfolio. Previous rumors are intensifying – and expectations for the so-called iPhone Fold are high.

While Samsung, Huawei, and other manufacturers have already launched several generations of foldable smartphones, Apple is taking its time. But this is no coincidence. Apple traditionally relies on mature technology rather than pushing into new markets early with immature prototypes. The launch of the iPhone Fold is not just a technological step, but also a clear strategic decision. According to JPMorgan , Apple will play a key role in shaping the foldable smartphone market – both in terms of quality and sales volume.

Apple plans foldable iPhone for September 2026

JPMorgan confirms that Apple plans to unveil a foldable smartphone as part of the iPhone 18 series in September 2026. This confirms what industry observers have suspected for months. The iPhone 17 series, which will be released this fall, will offer only minor improvements, according to the bank's forecasts. Investor and consumer interest is therefore increasingly shifting to the next generation of devices—i.e., 2026.

Technical specifications of the iPhone Fold

The iPhone Fold is said to have a 7.8-inch main display that folds inward, similar to a book. Rumors suggest there will be no visible crease, signaling a new generation of flexible displays. An additional 5.5-inch display sits on the outside, allowing quick access to basic functions when closed. The casing is made of titanium, and the hinge uses liquid metal technology for added stability. Instead of Face ID, Apple is opting for Touch ID on the iPhone Fold—likely integrated into the frame or into the power button on the side. There are two cameras on the back. Details about sensors, zoom, or ultra-wide angle have not yet been revealed, but Apple is likely basing the design on the high-end camera technology of current models.

Price and economic expectations

The starting price is expected to be $1,999. This will make the foldable iPhone the most expensive model in Apple's lineup. JPMorgan estimates that Apple is tapping into a market potential of $65 billion with the device. The company anticipates medium-term profit growth in the high single-digit percentage range. Sales are expected to reach several million devices in the first full year of sales, i.e., 2027. Around 45 million units are expected by 2028, according to JPMorgan.

  • By comparison, global sales of foldable smartphones are expected to reach 19 million units by 2025. Apple's entry into this market is likely to have a strong impact on the segment.

Market development and Apple's role

Foldable smartphones are no longer a niche product. Samsung currently dominates the market, but many models still struggle with weaknesses in display durability, folding mechanics, and software integration. Apple has the advantage of entering this phase with a mature product. The combination of robust hardware, an integrated iOS ecosystem, and typical Apple craftsmanship could give the segment a new boost. The iPhone Fold is also exciting from an investor perspective: Apple is expanding its product range and simultaneously opening up a new premium segment that promises high long-term margins.

  • iPhone Fold comes late – but with a typical Apple plan

iPhone Fold as a strategic milestone for Apple

The iPhone Fold isn't an experimental gimmick, but a carefully calculated expansion of Apple's portfolio. With high-quality technology, a new folding mechanism, a robust design, and a hefty price tag, Apple is positioning itself at the forefront of the foldable smartphone market. The market launch in September 2026 is likely to play a central role in the company's long-term strategy – both technically and economically. (Photo by seveniwe / Bigstockphoto)
