The iPhone Air is already the thinnest iPhone with only one display. Its successor is expected to be even slimmer – reaching the exact thickness that Apple currently only specifies for the unfolded iPhone Duo. And that's despite a larger battery.
According to Apple, the iPhone Air measures 5.64 millimeters, thus establishing its own device category within the iPhone lineup. For the second generation, information about the camera, battery, and display has been circulating for months, resulting in a fairly comprehensive picture of the iPhone Air 2 so far.
A new piece of information concerns the case thickness. Korean blogger yeux1122 writes in a post on the Naver platform that the iPhone Air 2 will be approximately 0.4 millimeters thinner than the current model, despite having a larger battery capacity.
Key Facts at a Glance
- The iPhone Air 2 is expected to be about 0.4 millimeters thinner than the current iPhone Air.
- That would make it about 5.2 millimeters thick – as thick as the iPhone Duo when unfolded.
- At the same time, the battery should have more capacity.
- The information comes from a leaker with a mixed track record.
From 5.64 to approximately 5.2 millimeters
Based on Apple's specifications for the current model, the difference would result in a case thickness of approximately 5.24 millimeters. That would be a reduction of almost eight percent – on a device that already offers very little room for improvement.
| Device | Thickness | Source |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone Air | 5.64 mm | Apple |
| iPhone Air 2 | approximately 5.2 mm | rumor |
| iPhone Duo, unfolded | 5.2 mm | Apple |
| iPhone Duo, folded | 11.3 mm | Apple |
Apple itself provides the comparison: According to the technical specifications of the iPhone Duo, the foldable device is 5.2 millimeters thin when unfolded. Each half of the Duo is therefore already thinner than the current iPhone Air.
More battery power in less space
The suggestion that a thinner casing will be paired with a larger battery aligns with previous reports. Back in the summer, there was already an initial indication of a larger battery in the iPhone Air 2. The new article doesn't explain how Apple intends to combine these two features.
According to current reports, the iPhone Air 2 is not expected in the fall, but rather in the spring of 2027, together with the iPhone 18 and the iPhone 18e.
The duo as a technological precursor
I find the information plausible, but not proven. yeux1122 is sometimes right, sometimes wrong, and the post cites neither a document nor a source in the supply chain. Supporting this theory is the fact that Apple already sells a device, the Duo, whose two halves measure 5.2 millimeters – so manufacturing for this thickness exists. However, the Duo distributes its components across two batteries and two casing halves, while the Air has to house everything in one.
Anyone who avoided the iPhone Air because of its battery life should pay particular attention to the battery life specifications of its successor, not its thickness. Half a millimeter less is hardly noticeable in the hand, but an extra hour of battery life in everyday use is.
Would you sacrifice some battery life for an even thinner iPhone Air – or should Apple dedicate all the gained space to the battery? Share your prediction in the comments.
