Apple is working on new monitors – All the rumors

Apple is once again in the spotlight of rumors. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, the company is working on several versions of a new Studio Display. The question is whether these are different models or simply different prototypes. Particularly intriguing: There are references to two code names – J427 and J527. What exactly they mean remains unclear.

External displays are an important accessory for Apple users, especially for professional applications. The current Studio Display was released in 2022 and is aimed primarily at creatives who want to use macOS in combination with a high-quality display. However, there have been rumors about a new generation for some time. Gurman has released new information suggesting that Apple is working on several versions.

Apple and the new Studio Display – what’s behind the code names?

According to Gurman, Apple is developing at least one new external display codenamed J427. This model is scheduled to be released in 2026 and will serve as the successor to the current Studio Display. Surprisingly, however, Apple is simultaneously working on another monitor called the J527. What exactly is behind this second monitor is unclear. Gurman believes it's possible that Apple is simply testing different prototypes for the same device. Alternatively, J527 could be a second model with a different screen size or modified specifications. An interesting point: The number "27" in the codename J527 suggests that it could be a 27-inch display. This corresponds to the size of the current Studio Display (via Bloomberg).

A third Studio Display or a new Pro Display XDR?

Things get even more exciting when you consider the possibility of a Pro Display XDR successor. Apple's high-end monitor for professional users was introduced in 2019 and is now almost six years old. Could the J527 be a new Pro Display XDR? Gurman himself remains cautious about making a clear distinction. He estimates it could be a Studio Display Pro—a more powerful version of the Studio Display with better specifications. Another theory is that Apple is testing the second-generation Studio Display with various technical options before deciding on a final version.

When will the new Apple displays be released?

Apple hasn't officially released any details about the new displays yet. According to Gurman, the J427 model isn't expected to be released until 2026 at the earliest. If the J527 is indeed a standalone device, it could also launch in the same timeframe or a little later. Since Apple often develops multiple prototypes in parallel, it's uncertain whether all tested models will actually be released. Some devices are dropped from the planning stage entirely, while others will be unveiled at a later date.
