Apple will introduce iOS 19 in a few months. In addition to a redesigned design for iPhones and iPads, the update could bring a feature that many users will find useful: Live Translation for AirPods will allow users to understand conversations in real time without relying on a separate app or the iPhone display.
Language can be a hurdle, especially when traveling, in meetings, or in situations where quick communication is required. While some translation apps exist, they usually require manual input or constant shifting of gaze between the conversation partner and the screen. With iOS 19, Apple aims to offer a solution that's integrated directly into the AirPods and works as naturally as possible.
Live translation for AirPods: How does the feature work?
According to a report, the new feature will allow a live conversation to be translated from one language to another. The AirPods will record the spoken language with their microphones, the iPhone will process the audio data, and the translation will be output directly through the AirPods. Users could, for example, hear a conversation in Spanish while receiving the German translation in real time. It is not yet known which languages the translation will be available in (via Bloomberg).
Compatibility: Which AirPods models are supported?
There's no official word yet on whether the feature will only be available for the latest AirPods Pro models or whether it will also work with older models. Apple has limited some AirPods updates to the newer Pro models in the past. With iOS 18, for example, special features like Adaptive Audio were introduced only for the second-generation AirPods Pro. So it's possible that Apple will also limit Live Translation to certain models.
More than just a new AirPods feature
Live translation is just one part of the larger plans for iOS 19. Apple is said to be working on a new design for the operating system that will more closely align the user interfaces of iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and visionOS. The company also wants to simplify the devices' operation. In addition to software updates, Apple is also researching new hardware features for the AirPods. There are reports that Apple plans to integrate cameras into future AirPods models that could be used for artificial intelligence. The idea is that users will receive visual information without having to take their iPhone out of their pocket. However, it will likely be several years before this technology is launched on the market.
