According to the Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station, Apple has already tested a 200-megapixel sensor for an iPhone periscope telephoto camera. However, its market launch is likely at least two years away – not expected until 2028.
The question of when Apple will equip the iPhone with a 200-megapixel camera sensor has been debated for months. Competitors like Samsung have been offering such sensors in their flagship phones for several generations. Apple traditionally prioritizes image quality over sheer pixel count – and is apparently taking a deliberately slow approach to the 200-megapixel leap. The latest leak now paints a clearer picture of the timeline.
According to a Weibo post by Digital Chat Station Apple has already evaluated a 200-megapixel sensor for a periscope telephoto camera. This camera design, with its "folding" construction, allows for longer focal lengths without increasing the thickness of the device. Despite the tests, a market launch is not realistic until 2028 at the earliest – a year later than the leaker himself expected in March 2026.
What this shift means
Digital Chat Station reported in March that a 200MP sensor might appear in the iPhone as early as next year. Their latest assessment significantly revises that. The leaker doesn't provide the exact reason for the delay, but the indications are clear: Apple apparently continues to prioritize optical flexibility and low-light performance over sheer resolution.
This aligns with Apple's established camera strategy. While other manufacturers advertise ever-increasing megapixel counts, Apple has focused for years on sensor size, pixel binning, and software image processing. The logic behind this is that a good 48MP sensor with a large sensor area produces better photos in most situations than a 200MP sensor with smaller individual pixels.
The iPhone 18 Pro sets different priorities
The upcoming iPhone 18 Pro will retain its proven 48MP sensor, but will break new ground in other areas. The main camera is expected to feature a variable aperture – a function previously only found in professional DSLR and mirrorless cameras. This allows the depth of field of a photo to be adjusted directly during capture, without any software manipulation.
The telephoto camera is also expected to be upgraded to 48 megapixels, with a longer focal length and a larger aperture. In practice, this combination often yields a greater improvement in image quality than a mere jump to 200 megapixels – at least according to Apple.
Apple's 200 MP roadmap: Where the contradiction lies
This new assessment contradicts somewhat earlier predictions. Morgan Stanley reported in January that Apple was working on a 200MP camera sensor for the iPhone and that the technology was closer than previously thought. Digital Chat Station still assumed a possible release in 2027 in March. Now, the earliest estimate is 2028.
These shifting timelines are typical of Apple's hardware development. The company often tests new technologies in prototypes for years before they reach mass production. The fact that Apple has already evaluated a 200MP sensor doesn't automatically mean it will be released soon—it only means the technology is seriously under consideration.
Why 2028 could make strategic sense
A 2028 release would coincide with the iPhone 20 – an anniversary model that Apple would likely want to equip with special features. The iPhone first saw the light of day in 2007; a major anniversary would be a good occasion for a completely redesigned camera architecture with a 200MP sensor and possibly further breakthroughs such as an under-display camera or new AR features.
By then, Apple is likely to have further refined its current 48MP strategy. The iPhone Pro – expected in 2027 – would therefore also still be based on a 48MP sensor, but with improvements in areas such as image processing, optics, and low-light performance.
What this means for buyers
Those waiting for a 200MP sensor in their iPhone will have to be patient a little longer. The good news: Even without 200 megapixels, the iPhone 18 Pro will bring significant camera improvements – especially through the variable aperture and the longer telephoto focal length.
