Women in Blue: Apple TV shows the trailer for the second season

The Azules are back – and this time the case leads deep into one of the darkest chapters of Mexican history. Apple TV has released the trailer for the second season of the Spanish-language crime drama and confirmed the release date. The investigation continues on August 12.

Two years after its debut, Apple TV returns with “Women in Blue” (“Las Azules”). The Spanish-language crime drama launched in July 2024 as the service's first all-Hispanic original production and, inspired by true events, tells the story of Mexico's first all-female police unit in Mexico City in the early 1970s. The second season continues this narrative and joins a series calendar that delivers new content on Apple TV month after month. What season 2 is about

The story once again centers on María, played by Bárbara Mori, who has now risen to the rank of lieutenant. She finds herself torn between the rules she is sworn to uphold and her thirst for truth when the body of a student activist is discovered. The investigation draws the Azules into a case that stretches back to the 1968 student massacre. When the remains of another person connected to that chapter of history surface shortly afterward, the entire department is thrown into turmoil.

Someone is bringing the law directly to the police station's doorstep – and the Azules are the last hope to stop the perpetrator. Alongside María, Valentina (Natalia Téllez), Gabina (Amorita Rasgado), and Ángeles (Ximena Sariñana) are fighting on two fronts simultaneously: inside and outside the precinct. Underlying this is the question of what the fight for one's ideals costs in a system riddled with corruption. The ensemble cast also includes Miguel Rodarte, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Christian Tappan, Horacio García Rojas, and Bruno Bichir.

The real-life inspiration behind the plot

The student massacre, which the new season addresses, is a historically documented event. On October 2, 1968, the military and police opened fire on thousands of unarmed demonstrators in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas in the Tlatelolco district of Mexico City – just ten days before the opening of the Summer Olympics in the same city. The number of dead remains disputed to this day: Official sources initially spoke of a few dozen, while estimates from eyewitnesses and historians range up to several hundred.

The event is considered one of the turning points in modern Mexican history and is commemorated throughout the country every year on October 2nd. By tying its crime story to this real historical rupture, the second season shifts its focus from a single serial killer - the core of the first season - to political violence and its years-long repercussions.
