WhatsApp expands platform to include accounts for children

The messaging app WhatsApp is expanding its platform with a new account option for preschool children. The aim is to enable young users to use the messaging app safely, while simultaneously giving parents more control over contacts and settings.

The new accounts are managed by parents and include specific restrictions as well as additional protective features. At the same time, WhatsApp emphasizes that personal messages will remain private and protected by end-to-end encryption.

More and more children are coming into contact with smartphones and messaging services at an early age. WhatsApp is responding to this development with new accounts specifically designed for younger users.

The so-called preteen accounts enable communication via the messenger, while parents can control important functions such as contacts, groups and privacy settings.

WhatsApp accounts managed by parents

According to WhatsApp, parents or guardians can now set up an account for a preschool-aged child. These accounts differ from regular user profiles, as they include additional restrictions and control options.

Once set up, the account is managed by the parents. They can determine who is allowed to contact the account and which groups it can join.

In addition, message requests from unknown contacts can be checked.

Setting up children's accounts

Two devices are required for setup:

the child's smartphone
the smartphone of a parent or guardian

First, the child's device is set up. Then it is connected to the parent's device so that the account can be managed.

After setup, parents retain control over important account settings.

Control over settings and security

Parents can manage and adjust the privacy settings of their child's account. This includes contacts, group memberships, and other data protection options.

These settings are additionally protected by a parent PIN. Only parents or guardians can access the relevant functions and make changes.

Chats will remain private

Despite the additional control options, personal conversations remain protected. WhatsApp points out that all conversations continue to be secured through end-to-end encryption.

This means that only the participants in the conversation can read or hear the content. WhatsApp itself has no access to this data.
