According to a newly published support document, WhatsApp has ended support for iOS 9 and older versions of Apple's mobile operating system.

WhatsApp has now officially announced a new support document confirmedthat the messenger service can now only be run on devices running iOS 10 or later (released in 2016). Until now, iOS 9 users - primarily iPhone 4S owners - were able to use the encrypted chat service. In the future, however, iOS 10 will be required, which means that users will need an iPhone 5 or a newer model to use WhatsApp.

WhatsApp recommends migration

According to the document, the service currently requires the following systems:

  • Android devices with Android version 4.0.3 or newer
  • iPhones with iOS 10 or later
  • Selected phones running KaiOS 2.5.1 and later, including JioPhone and JioPhone 2

Support for iOS 8 was discontinued on February 1, 2020. Customers who can no longer use the app due to the end of support are advised to back up their WhatsApp chats in iCloud and restore the chat history on a newer, supported device. The Facebook subsidiary has provided instructions for this here provided. (Photo by oasisamuel / Bigstockphoto)

Apple devices here are not test units on loan for two weeks but everyday tools: from the iPhone through MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac to the Apple Vision Pro, at least one device from nearly every product category is in daily use, many of them replaced annually. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it is published.
