After fifteen years at the helm, Tim Cook is working his last day as CEO of Apple this Monday. In his farewell message this morning, he addressed the entire workforce – and for much of it, he didn't talk about Apple at all, but rather about the people who work there.
August 31, 2026, will be Cook's last day as Chief Executive Officer. On Tuesday, John Ternus, currently Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, will take over. The date has been set since April 20, when Apple announced the succession in a newsroom announcement. Fifteen years separate Cook's first and last days in office, a period reflected in revenue figures, market capitalization, and product generations. The departure itself, however, is considerably less dramatic than these statistics suggest.

Cook had only a few, but clear, words to say about his successor: He was handing over the reins with great peace of mind, and hardly anyone understood as well as Ternus what it took to build world-changing products. Cook spoke publicly again later that same day in a post on X: His title would change the next day, but his affection for the Apple community would not.
The new role begins on Tuesday
Cook is not leaving Apple. He is moving to the top of the board of directors and will become executive chairman. On the same day, Ternus joins the board, and Arthur Levinson, non-executive chairman for fifteen years, becomes lead independent director. This does not complete the restructuring: Apple has also filled several positions below the top management level this year.. Ternus' previous Hardware Engineering division was already taken over by Johny Srouji as Chief Hardware Officer in April.
Apple briefly outlined Cook's specific responsibilities as Executive Chairman in April: He would provide support on certain issues, particularly in discussions with political decision-makers worldwide. A Bloomberg report from last weekend elaborated on this, stating that Cook intends to maintain relationships with the US and Chinese governments and is available for any further tasks his successor deems necessary.
Cook's new task extends as far as Brussels and Munich
For the German-speaking region, this aspect is the most interesting part of the entire transition. Cook has already been doing precisely this work in recent months: at the beginning of July , he discussed a path for Siri AI with the EU Commission, and a few days later, he and Ternus spoke with Bavarian Minister-President Markus Söder about Apple's Munich location. Both discussions fall squarely within the scope of responsibilities defined by the new role.
In practical terms, this means that the contact person that European authorities and national governments have known for years remains the same. Ternus doesn't have to build the regulatory fronts in Brussels from scratch while focusing on products and organization. His career path within the company already suggests that Ternus will continue on the established course rather than abandon it.
A farewell without a single product set
What's remarkable about the news is what's missing. Not a word about the iPhone, AI, or margins, no outlook for the coming quarters, not a single figure. Cook, who came to Apple as a logistics expert and built the company into a giant through key performance indicators, bids farewell with a text that can be read even without any knowledge of the product range. He even states it himself: he's most proud of what doesn't appear in any annual report.
This is more than a matter of style. A CEO who speaks about culture instead of strategy on his last day deliberately shifts the focus away from himself and toward what remains – leaving the substantive stage to his successor, who has a keynote address to deliver eight days later.
