Apple has announced the release date for the first season of "Small Prophets." The six-part comedy will premiere on Apple TV on October 7, 2026, in all countries except the UK. It was created, written, and directed by Mackenzie Crook, who previously delivered one of the most distinctive British series of recent years with "Detectorists." What it's about
The story centers on Michael Sleep, played by Pearce Quigley. Since his girlfriend Clea disappeared seven years ago, he has led an inconspicuous life: working at a hardware store, visiting his father Brian, and hoping for her return.
Then Brian gives him an old recipe that requires rainwater, horse manure, and a good dose of alchemy. Michael sets about creating homunculi - magical beings that can predict the future - not without skepticism. His question to them is both simple and difficult: Will he ever see Clea again?
He receives help from his young colleague Kacey. The friendship between the two stems, not least, from their shared dislike of their branch manager – and awakens the curiosity of the neighbors, who are determined to find out what is actually going on in the garden shed.
Filming took place in and around Manchester. The series incorporates animated sequences into the plot, creating an unusual tone in a suburban neighborhood rife with secrets and lies.
Who is in front of and behind the camera
Mackenzie Crook writes, directs, and plays the branch manager herself. Alongside Quigley and Lauren Patel as Kacey, several well-known names in British comedy appear on screen: Michael Palin, known from Monty Python, as well as Sophie Willan, Jon Pointing, and Paul Kaye.
The film was produced by Treasure Trove Productions and Blue House Productions. Apple acquired the rights from international distributor Sphere Abacus.
Why the UK launch is later
The exception for Great Britain has a simple reason: the series already aired there at the beginning of the year, on BBC Two and in the broadcaster's media library. It won't move to Apple TV there until 2027.
For viewers in these countries, this is the more favorable side of the equation. October 7th applies equally to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland – the detour via an earlier broadcast is eliminated because the series has not yet been shown anywhere here.
An acquisition, not in-house production
The path of this series differs from that of a typical Apple production. "Small Prophets" was not developed for the service, but first aired on British television and was subsequently acquired through a distributor.
Given the autumn plans with "Brothers", the Comedy with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson From September 23rd onwards, this results in an unusually wide range within just a few weeks.
The success of the series can be proven independently of Apple's own application: In March 2026, it won the award for best series in the International Panorama at Series Mania, and on Rotten Tomatoes, the season has a critic rating of 100 percent.
What the acquisition reveals about Apple's fall
Our assessment: Apple isn't acquiring this to fill a gap, but rather to serve an audience that its own productions don't reach. A quiet, small British comedy stands in stark contrast to a catalog that relies on big names and high budgets – and that's precisely where its value lies for the service.

A calm alternative in the autumn program
