Apple fixed an issue that prevented its Studio Display from updating by re-signing iOS 15.4 specifically for the screen.

At the weekend reportedthat owners of the Apple Studio Display were unable to update the screen to the latest firmware. Now Apple has solved the problem with a small change to the update itself. The problem occurred when users tried to update the firmware to iOS 15.4. However, they received a message that the process "could not be completed" and that they should try again later. For others, the firmware update started but was aborted in the "Preparing" phase. The user Mr. Macintosh discovered on Twitter that the firmware was re-signed late Sunday evening and the affected Studio Displays successfully installed the update. On Apple's support pages, the firmware is described as Studio Display Firmware Update 15.4 and includes "minor stability improvements" as well as support for Boot Camp on Intel-based Macs.

Studio Display: iOS offers a lot of potential

What isn't included is a fix for webcam performance. Apple stopped signing iOS 15.4 on April 7, a week after the release of iOS 15.4.1. In this case, signing the firmware only benefits the Studio Display and doesn't result in re-signing firmware for other devices. You can update your display's firmware version by clicking the Apple icon in the menu, then System Preferences, navigating to Software Update, and then starting the update installation. A Mac running macOS 12.3 or later is required for the update to work. While monitors can receive firmware updates, Apple's use of iOS for the Studio Display offers more potential for new features and major upgrades that wouldn't normally be made for the peripheral. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it is published.
