After countless rumors, Google has now introduced three new smartphones, one of which is said to compete with the iPhone SE in terms of price.

Google has now officially announced the Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 devices. The new Pixel 4a has a hole-punch display and 128 GB of storage space. The device is powered by the octa-core Snapdragon 730G with 6 GB of RAM and Titan M security module. The Pixel 4a is also the second phone after the Pixel 4 to be equipped with the new Google Assistant. Google is pursuing a similar strategy with the device as Apple did with the iPhone SE 2020. As a reminder: Apple's entry-level smartphone has the A13 processor. But the two devices differ in terms of display and design. While the Google Pixel 4a has a 5.81-inch OLED panel, the iPhone SE offers a 4.7-inch LCD screen. Google's entry-level device was also built almost frameless.

Slightly cheaper than the iPhone SE 2020

The fingerprint scanner is located on the back of the device. The Pixel 4a's display also has 1080 x 2340 pixels at 443 PPI and an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. In addition to a USB-C port, a headphone jack has also been installed. Regarding the camera, Google explained in the press release:

With the same camera as Pixel 4 and a redesigned hole-punch front camera, Pixel 4a comes with the same features that have helped millions of Pixel users around the world capture their most precious moments: HDR+ with dual exposure, Portrait mode, Top Photo, Night Sight mode with astrophotography and dual video stabilization.

In terms of price, the device is expected to put pressure on the iPhone SE. While Apple charges 466.90 euros for its 64 GB version, the Google Pixel 4a with 128 GB is expected to be available from 349 euros. The iPhone SE with 128 GB costs 515.65 euros.

Pixel 4a (5G) & Pixel 5 to follow

In addition to the Pixel 4a, a Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 were also released. The two devices start at 499 euros. The company commented on this as follows:

This fall, we'll be introducing two more devices: Pixel 4a (5G), available from €499 (currently €486.40 due to the current VAT reduction), and Pixel 5. Both devices come with 5G and can make streaming videos, downloading, and playing video games with Stadia or other platforms faster and smoother than before.

Pixel 4a (5G) and Pixel 5 are coming to the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Japan, Taiwan, and Australia. We'll share more information about the devices and our approach to 5G in the coming months.

Details about the specifications are yet to come. The Pixel 4a will be available in Germany from October 1st. Interested parties can pre-order it from September 10th via the Google Store for around 340.20 euros. (Image: Google)

Apple devices here are not test units on loan for two weeks but everyday tools: from the iPhone through MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac to the Apple Vision Pro, at least one device from nearly every product category is in daily use, many of them replaced annually. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it is published.
