Although the iPhone SE 2020 looks like the iPhone 8 on the outside, it has been upgraded accordingly on the inside. Thanks to the A13 chip, the device is faster than the fastest Android smartphone. This has been shown by some tests. The price-performance ratio was rated as very good overall. But who does Apple want to appeal to with the device? According to analysts, the main target audience is iPhone 6 or iPhone 6S users. So far, they do not seem to be interested in Face ID devices. For many, the entry-level prices will also play a role.

But in order to be up to date and continue to use Apple services, newer hardware is needed in the long term. This is where the iPhone SE comes into play. An analysis by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) has now been published, based on the latest buyer survey. According to this, Apple's plan has worked. The iPhone SE accounted for 19 percent [of all iPhone sales] despite being available for only part of the quarter. At $399 for the base model, the SE is priced well below the year-old XR and very successfully replaces the nearly three-year-old entry-level iPhone 8 models.
For the iPhone SE, the CIRP found that Apple customers were more likely to upgrade from another iPhone, usually a much older model.
According to the analysis, 73 percent of iPhone SE 2020 buyers were using a model that was more than four years old.
"Every few years, Apple releases a new, affordable iPhone with updated features to appeal to customers using the oldest iPhones," said Mike Levin, CIRP partner and co-founder. The iPhone SE appears to have reached this specific segment of long-time iPhone users.

This quarter, SE buyers had really old phones, with nearly three-quarters owning an iPhone that was three years old or older. So they were upgrading from iPhone 5, 6, or 7 models, meaning these users were really waiting a while to buy a new phone."
However, according to CIRP, iPhone 11 sales are not at risk. Both devices therefore have their own target audience. "The fall 2019 iPhone 11 and 11 Pro models remain the most popular, together accounting for approximately two-thirds of sales," says Josh Lowitz, partner and co-founder of CIRP.
Apple's plan seems to be working. However, if you are still using the iPhone SE 2016 and are waiting for a device of the same size with Face ID, you should take a closer look at the upcoming iPhone 12.
