OpenAI has launched a new AI model called o3-mini, which is available in both ChatGPT and the OpenAI API. The model was announced in December and is aimed specifically at users who need cost-effective but powerful AI for technical and scientific applications. What is particularly noteworthy is that with o3-mini, OpenAI is entering into direct competition with DeepSeek, a company from China that also develops advanced language models.

The development of AI models is progressing rapidly and OpenAI is one of the companies that are shaping the market with new solutions. With o3-mini, OpenAI is breaking new ground by publishing a powerful but resource-saving model that has been specifically optimized for technical applications. At the same time, Reacts The company is thus responding to growing competition from DeepSeek and other developers who offer inexpensive, specialized models. This model could be particularly interesting for developers, researchers and scientists who need quick and precise answers to complex questions. But general users who want to benefit from improved AI also get a powerful alternative to previous OpenAI models with o3-mini.

Functions and special features of o3-mini

o3-mini is a reasoning model optimized for tasks that require logical thinking, mathematics, and scientific analysis. OpenAI designed it to provide high precision despite its smaller size. Key features include:

  • High Accuracy in Mathematics and Science
  • Strong programming skills
  • search function with current web sources
  • function calls and structured outputs
  • Multiple computing power levels for different applications

The search function in particular sets o3-mini apart from many other models. It can provide relevant links to current web sources to provide more precise and contextual answers. This makes it particularly useful for applications where up-to-date information is crucial.

Differences to other OpenAI models

While o1 continues to serve as the standard model for general queries, o3-mini is specifically optimized for technical domains. OpenAI thus offers a specialized solution for users who need more precise answers and more efficient processing in mathematical or scientific fields. A key feature of o3-mini is its dynamic computing power. There are three different options:

  • Low computing power for fast, simple answers with minimal resource consumption
  • Medium computing power as standard mode with balanced speed and accuracy
  • High computing power for complex calculations and in-depth analyses

When used with ChatGPT, o3-mini defaults to medium processing power to achieve a balance between speed and precision.

availability and use

o3-mini will be gradually released for different user groups:

  • ChatGPT Plus, Team and Pro users can now use the model
  • o1-mini is replaced by o3-mini in the model selection
  • The daily message limit for Plus and Team users has been increased from 50 to 150
  • Free users can use o3-mini for the first time

For free users, OpenAI offers a way to try out the model. You can select the “Reason” option in the Message Composer to test the reasoning model. This is the first time OpenAI has made such a model available to free users.

significance for the AI market

The release of o3-mini is a strategic move by OpenAI to remain competitive. The AI market is becoming increasingly dynamic and companies like DeepSeek are releasing powerful alternatives. With o3-mini, OpenAI shows that it continues to work on more efficient, more specialized models to offer users more choice. The ability to choose different levels of computing power is particularly interesting for developers who want to flexibly integrate the model into their own applications. At the same time, free users also benefit from improved AI quality.

o3-mini: A milestone for OpenAI and technical applications

o3-mini is an important step forward for OpenAI and brings a powerful but cost-effective model to the market. It combines mathematical precision, programming skills and web search to improve technical applications. It represents an interesting alternative to previous models, especially for users who need fast and reliable answers in science and technology. By gradually introducing it to different user groups and allowing users to test the model for free, OpenAI is setting an example for a wider availability of powerful AI. At the same time, with o3-mini the company shows that it wants to continue to be at the forefront of AI development. (Photo by Unsplash / Dima Solomin)
