Among the most important changes is the introduction of Touch ID, a technology that was already available on the MacBook Pro. It has its own Touch ID sensor that creates a secure channel to the Mac's Secure Enclave to protect the authentication process. The keyboard also includes function keys that can be used to trigger Spotlight, Dictation, and Do Not Disturb. At the bottom left, the function key can also be used to start typing emoji characters.

Apple also designed the keyboard to have a casing that matches the color of the new iMac to ensure a consistent look. Versions with a numeric keypad are also available. One important point to consider is compatibility. According to Apple, the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID is only supported by Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 11.4 or higher. This means that with the Touch ID integrated into the keyboard, users of the M1 MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac mini can now conveniently use Touch ID with an external keyboard.
