macOS 15, also known as macOS Sequoia, brings a significant change in the storage space requirements for app installations from the Mac App Store.

With each new version of macOS, Apple introduces new features that improve the user experience. One of the most notable changes in macOS 15 is the way storage space is managed for app installations. This change is especially significant for users of large games and apps.

Optimized storage requirements

In macOS 15 Sequoia, Apple has fundamentally revised the previous storage requirements for app installations from the Mac App Store. Previously, it was necessary to reserve twice the storage space of the final app size in order to complete an installation. This was a significant challenge, especially for large games that can be tens or even hundreds of gigabytes in size.

The new regulation

Starting with the second beta of macOS 15, the free space required is now equal to the final installation size of the app plus a small buffer. This means you no longer have to provide twice the space to install an app. This change makes it easier to use the available space more efficiently and avoid unnecessary storage problems.

Benefits for users

The new storage requirements offer several advantages:

  • More efficient storage management: You can better estimate whether you have enough space for an app, making it easier to manage your storage.
  • Larger games and apps: Especially with large games, you no longer have to worry about having twice the storage space.
  • Less confusion: The new guidelines will allow developers to update their app size disclosures, reducing confusion about required storage requirements.

developer instructions

Apple has asked all developers to update their messaging regarding app size requirements to reflect this change. This will ensure that you, the user, receive clear and concise information about how much free space is actually needed to install an app.

release schedule

macOS 15 Sequoia is currently in the second developer beta phase. A public beta is expected in July, and the general release is planned for the fall. This timeline gives developers and users plenty of time to adapt to the new requirements and take full advantage of the improved memory management.

macOS 15 makes storage management much easier

The changes in storage requirements in macOS 15 Sequoia are a significant step forward. This optimization makes it easier to manage your storage space and allows you to install larger apps and games without additional storage problems. Stay tuned and use the public betas to try out the new features for yourself. General availability in the fall will give you even more ways to get the most out of your Mac. (Image: Apple)
