Last year, Apple introduced the PiP (picture-in-picture) feature in iOS 14 so that users could watch videos in a floating window while doing other tasks or running apps. Now the YouTube app on iPhone and iPad is following suit.

One of the new features in iOS 14 was the picture-in-picture function. This allows users to watch videos on the iPhone while running other apps and completing tasks. Now YouTube is following suit – but there is a catch. The company writes (via MacRumors):

Youtube Picture-in-Picture: Premium subscription required

Picture-in-Picture (PiP) allows users to watch YouTube videos in a small mini-player while browsing outside of the YouTube app on their mobile device. We're starting to roll out PiP to YouTube Premium members on iOS and plan to roll out PiP to all US iOS users as well.

Accordingly, all YouTube Premium users worldwide will have access to the feature. There will be an exception on the US market, however. Non-subscribers will also be able to use the feature there. However, it will not be possible for music content. YouTube Premium currently costs 11.99 euros per month and offers, among other things, no advertising, downloads on the go and background playback, which is now being expanded with the picture-in-picture feature. Apple devices here are not test units on loan for two weeks but everyday tools: from the iPhone through MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac to the Apple Vision Pro, at least one device from nearly every product category is in daily use, many of them replaced annually. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it is published.
