A few days ago we reported that Apple might launch an iPad Pro and a MacBook Pro with mini-LED screens plans – now the rumor is being fueled by an Apple supplier.
According to the well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple could present an iPad Pro and MacBook Pro with a mini-LED screen as early as next year or the year after - Epistar is said to be a possible supplier. Now his suspicion is being fueled by Taiwan. Apple supplier Epistar made a suspicious statement to DigiTimes magazine. Company President Chin-Yung Fan said that his company's customers are developing notebooks, tablets, smartphones and monitors with mini-LED backlight systems. According to this, demand for mini-LEDs would increase significantly in the second half of 2020. The Epistar President did not name any names - but observers are sure that Apple is also included. The statement would therefore also confirm Kuo's report.
More expensive, thinner and lighter
The analyst also expects a significant price increase, as this screen technology is significantly more expensive - but also better. According to his current information, the iPad Pro will have a 10- to 12-inch screen, while the MacBook Pro will be available with a 15- to 17-inch screen.
Kuo also emphasized that the new display technology based on mini-LEDs will enable thinner and lighter products while offering many of the same benefits of OLED screens - including a wide color gamut, high contrast and dynamic range, and true black. The use of new screens should be a good reason for some to upgrade despite the higher price. Whether the devices will be released at the end of 2020 remains to be seen, of course.
