Apple has released the second developer beta of iOS 27. Simultaneously, updated test versions of iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, tvOS 27, and visionOS 27 are available. This marks the next phase of the testing that began at WWDC – on the road to the final release this fall.
The second beta follows approximately two weeks after the start of the iOS 27 testing phase at WWDC 2026. While the first beta was released immediately after the keynote and provided initial access to the new systems, the second test version serves to further expand functionality, fix bugs, and gradually unlock individual features. Unlike the interim updates of an ongoing generation, a significant amount of development work is still required at the beginning of a new cycle: Several months pass before the final version is released in September, during which Apple initially provides new builds roughly every two weeks, switching to a weekly schedule only shortly before the release.
iOS 27 Beta 2: What we know so far
At the time of publication, no official release notes detailing specific new features are available. The new version is currently being analyzed. A separate, more detailed report will follow as soon as any visible innovations, functional adjustments, or system-relevant changes are documented.
In the early stages of a new operating system, Apple often uses the first betas to gradually activate features that were announced at WWDC but not yet active. Minor changes to the user interface and individual system functions are also common during this phase.
Looking back: What iOS 27 introduced at WWDC
The defining feature of iOS 27 is the completely redesigned voice assistant, which Apple has introduced as Siri AI. It responds in a more conversational way, understands on-screen content as well as personal context, and can combine information from the web as well as messages, emails, and photos. A dedicated app allows users to revisit conversations across devices. It can be accessed via "Hey Siri," the side button, or a downward swipe from the Dynamic Island.
For users in the EU, however, the launch of the new assistant is delayed: as with earlier features, Apple cites requirements under the Digital Markets Act as the reason why Siri AI is likely to arrive here later than in other regions. The specific regulatory hurdles that cause the DMA to slow down Siri AI on iPhone and iPad stem above all from the provisions on interoperability with third-party providers.
Beyond Siri, Apple showcased a number of other innovations at WWDC. For the first time, the camera app can be freely customized., including movable controls and a dedicated mode for visual intelligence. Photos app receives new AI tools For expanding, enhancing, and cropping images. Wallet allows this. „Create a Pass” function” The creation of custom digital passports. When can we expect the final release?
WWDC marks the unveiling, not the release. The final iOS 27 version typically appears in September, alongside the next iPhone generation. Until then, the system will go through several developer betas before the public beta is released in mid-July, granting access to users without a developer account. Shortly before the official release, Apple usually makes a release candidate available.
Beta 2 is initially available to registered developers. As this is early test software, installation on a secondary device is strongly recommended.
Overview of the other systems
Alongside iOS 27 Beta 2, Apple has also released updated test versions of the other systems:
iPadOS 27 adopts the core innovations of iOS 27 and adds iPad-specific enhancements. macOS 27 continues the refinement of the Liquid Glass design and brings further optimizations for the Mac. watchOS 27 brings the Modular Ultra watch face to more Apple Watch models and improves Apple Watch performance. tvOS 27 and visionOS 27, at this early stage, primarily receive minor adjustments and stability improvements.

iOS 27: Here's what's next
With Beta 2, the most intensive phase of the annual software cycle begins. In the coming weeks, further features will be unlocked, refined, and tested for stability – most notably the new Siri, whose full functionality is likely to only become apparent during the beta phase. It's worth looking at Apple's past practices: not everything presented at WWDC necessarily appears in the first version. In the past, Apple has removed individual features during the beta phase and only added them in later updates.
