Apple has released the Release Candidate of iOS 26.5. iPadOS 26.5, macOS 26.5 ("Tahoe"), watchOS 26.5, tvOS 26.5, and visionOS 26.5 are also available as Release Candidates. The Release Candidate is generally the final version, which will be released to all users in the coming days.

With the release of the Release Candidate, the multi-week beta phase of iOS 26.5 comes to an end. Following Beta 1, Beta 2, Beta 3, and Beta 4, this is the version that Apple considers ready for release. The RC is functionally identical to the final update – provided no critical bugs are discovered, this exact build will be delivered to all users. WWDC 2026 takes place from June 8th to 12th. iOS 26.5 will be available in its final version beforehand.

What is a release candidate?

A Release Candidate (RC) is the final test version before public release. Apple makes the RC available to both registered developers and participants in the public beta program. The build typically corresponds exactly to the final version, which is then distributed to all users via Software Update. Apple only releases a second RC in the event of serious, newly discovered problems.

What iOS 26.5 brings overall

During the beta phase, iOS 26.5 defined its functional scope. Key new features include "Suggested Places" in Apple Maps and the preparation for advertising in the Maps app. End-to-end encryption for RCS was finalized in the Messages app – a feature that had been tested in iOS 26.4 but not included in the final version.

For the European market, Apple expanded support for third-party wearables under the Digital Markets Act. In the App Store, Apple is introducing new monthly subscriptions with a 12-month commitment, offering developers an additional subscription option. Other changes included automatic Bluetooth pairing for Magic accessories via USB-C and expanded options for transferring data from iPhone to Android. New Siri features are not included in iOS 26.5; the anticipated AI upgrades are expected to arrive with iOS 27.

When will the final version be released?

After the release of a Release Candidate, it typically only takes a few days for Apple to release the final version. The update will then be available for all compatible devices via "Settings > General > Software Update". The final version of iOS 26.5 is expected to be released next week.

Overview of the other systems

Alongside iOS 26.5 RC, Apple also released the release candidates of the following systems:

iPadOS 26.5 includes the final adjustments for iPad-specific use. macOS 26.5 ("Tahoe") is also nearing release. watchOS 26.5, tvOS 26.5, and visionOS 26.5 are receiving their final optimizations.

We will report on this separately as soon as the final versions are officially released.

iOS 26.5: Here's what's next

With the release of the Release Candidate, the end of the iOS 26.5 testing phase is imminent. The final version should be available to all users in the coming days – and thus the last major update before iOS 27, which Apple is expected to unveil at WWDC 2026 on June 8th.
