With iOS 19, AI features could be integrated directly into the iPhone Calendar app for the first time. This is according to a recent publication from the EU Commission. It lists a previously undisclosed acquisition by Apple. Specifically, it concerns Mayday Labs Inc., a company that specializes in AI-assisted scheduling. Numerous indications point to Apple technologies from Mayday soon appearing in the iOS 19 Calendar.
Apple Calendar is one of the standard apps on every iPhone, but has seen little innovation in recent years. While apps like Photos, Mail, and Siri have already integrated initial AI elements, Calendar has remained largely conventional. That could change with iOS 19. The timing would be opportune: Apple is increasingly working on expanding its apps with so-called Apple Intelligence features—AI that runs locally on the device. And the Calendar app would be a logical next step.
Mayday: AI planning from a single source
Mayday Labs Inc. was a startup in the field of AI-assisted time management. The app combined a calendar, task manager, and a smart scheduling assistant into a single platform. Its goal was to help users organize their daily lives with intelligent suggestions, automatic scheduling, and learning algorithms. On its official website, Mayday called itself "your AI co-pilot for scheduling." The app ran on Mac, iOS, and iPad and was discontinued on May 1, 2024—just weeks after its acquisition by Apple on April 3, 2024.
What exactly could Mayday do?
According to the official description , Mayday had a whole range of functions that went beyond a normal calendar:
- Automatic scheduling: Mayday was able to identify suitable time slots for meetings or tasks without users having to synchronize their schedules themselves. Current priorities and availability were taken into account.
- Adaptive time planning: The app analyzed usage behavior, preferred times of day, and productivity patterns to make appropriate suggestions for appointments and tasks.
- Team planning: Mayday should help groups in particular to find the best time for joint appointments – without manual coordination.
- AI-scheduled tasks: Users could specify tasks with duration and deadline, and the AI automatically placed them in free time slots.
- Dynamic rescheduling: If appointments were postponed or the day went differently than planned, Mayday automatically adjusted the calendar.
- Smart appointment links: Using individual booking links, other people could suggest appointments without having access to the entire calendar structure. Availability and limits could also be defined.
What this has to do with iOS 19
The EU recently published a list of tech acquisitions from the past 18 months, including Apple and Mayday. This information was previously not public. Integration into iOS 18 was hardly possible due to the timing, as the acquisition did not take place until April 2024. However, since iOS 19 will not be released until fall 2025 at the earliest, enough time would have passed by now to integrate the technology. Currently, Apple Calendar is one of the last major apps without AI features. With the introduction of "Apple Intelligence" and a completely redesigned Siri in iOS 19, this will likely change. Apple's approach to AI functions is to process everything locally on the device – with a focus on data protection and control for users. An intelligent calendar app would be a central component of this.
Potential added value for Siri
Another possible application for Mayday technology could be Siri. Apple is planning a significantly more powerful version of the voice assistant with iOS 19, which will, among other things, more closely integrate the calendar. An AI that knows your appointments, thinks along with you, and actively supports you is part of the Siri promise in the new version.
