As of today, iOS 18.5, iPadOS 18.5, macOS 15.5, watchOS 11.5, tvOS 18.5, and visionOS 2.5 are available for download to all users worldwide. The updates can be installed as usual via the respective system settings. Although these aren't major feature releases, the updates bring some useful new features and minor improvements – especially in the areas of usability and system maintenance.
iOS 18.5 is primarily a classic interim update. But Apple has taken the opportunity to respond to user requests – especially in the Mail app. Even in the first betas, it was clear that Apple wanted to make the new design, introduced in 2024, more flexible. Two much-criticized features can now be controlled directly within the app:
- Hide contact photos: Users can disable the small photos next to emails using the three-dot menu in the Mail app.
- Group by sender: This option can now also be switched off directly in the app.
This provides more clarity for all those who have not been able to get used to the new layout since iOS 18.2 (in the EU from iOS 18.4).
AppleCare: Better integrated
A new banner has been introduced in Settings under General > AppleCare & Warranty, providing quicker access to protection information. Additionally, AppleCare management is now also accessible from the Devices section of the Apple ID menu.
More control for parents: New screen time warning
A new feature is particularly relevant for families: As soon as the Screen Time passcode is correctly entered on a child's device—whether intentionally or guessed—parents now receive a push notification. This improves control and immediately reveals any attempts at tampering. Previously, there was no way to be notified of such an action.
Other new features in iOS 18.5
In addition to the points mentioned above, iOS 18.5 also brings some system-wide improvements:
- New Pride wallpaper under Settings > Wallpaper
- Purchase option in Apple TV app for content on third-party devices now directly from the iPhone
- Fixed an issue with the Apple Vision Pro app, which previously occasionally displayed a black screen
- Satellite function for iPhone 13 (all models) with supporting carriers
Updates also for iPad, Mac, Watch & Vision Pro
All other systems were updated simultaneously. These were mostly accompanying maintenance updates focused on security, stability, and minor improvements. However, there is one notable detail in watchOS 11.5:
- New alarm clock option: Alarms can now deliberately break silent mode – ideal for users who want to be woken up safely without having to activate all sounds.
visionOS 2.5 has also been further stabilized. A major new feature is still pending, but could be announced with visionOS 3 at WWDC.
iOS 18.5: Small update with noticeable improvements
With iOS 18.5 and the accompanying updates, Apple isn't delivering a revolution, but it is delivering meaningful advancements. Those who were annoyed by inflexible design elements in the Mail app or actively use Screen Time should particularly benefit from the update. AppleCare has also been addressed in a more practical way. The updates are now available worldwide – and the focus is now slowly turning toward iOS 19 and WWDC.
