With iOS 18.4, Apple is expanding the functions of the Home app to include a new smart home integration. The latest beta version supports robot vacuum cleaners that are compatible with the Matter protocol for the first time. This makes it possible to control these devices directly via Apple's Home app and integrate them into automations. Until now, users had to use the manufacturer's own apps for such functions. With this innovation, control is centralized and enables deeper integration into the Apple ecosystem.
Until now, many smart vacuum cleaners could be operated via their own apps, but cross-system control via Apple HomeKit was not possible. With the introduction of Matter as a standardized smart home protocol, this is changing. Support for compatible vacuum cleaners in iOS 18.4 is a significant step towards a uniform and user-friendly smart home experience. This innovation not only affects iPhone users, but is also being rolled out for other Apple devices.
Support for Matter vacuum cleaners in the Home app
Since the first beta of iOS 18.4, the Home app is now able to detect and control robot vacuum cleaners, provided they support the Matter protocol (via Smart Home Centre). The first compatible model on the market is the SwitchBot S10 Robot Vacuum and Mop. Other manufacturers have already announced that they will make their devices compatible with software updates. With the new function, smart vacuum cleaners can be controlled using Siri voice commands. For example, users can start cleaning or send the vacuum cleaner back to the charging station using voice commands. The devices can also be integrated into existing HomeKit automations and scenes. This makes it possible, for example, to have the vacuum cleaner start automatically when no one is at home.
Control options in the Home app
The Apple Home app offers a range of control options for compatible vacuum cleaners. These include:
- Starting and stopping cleaning
- Enable or disable the mop
- Switch between different cleaning modes, such as quick or deep cleaning
- Returning the vacuum cleaner to the charging station
These basic functions can be used directly via the iPhone, HomePod, Apple TV or other Apple devices. For more advanced functions, such as mapping rooms or creating individual cleaning plans, the respective manufacturer's app is still required.
Availability and compatibility
iOS 18.4 is currently in beta and is expected to be released as a free update for iPhones in April. Support for Matter robot vacuum cleaners will also be integrated into iPadOS 18.4, tvOS 18.4, watchOS 11.4 and macOS 15.4. This will make it possible to control the devices not only with the iPhone, but also with other Apple products.
