With iOS 15, users will get new features within Find My, including the ability to locate a lost or missing iPhone even if it has been turned off or reset to factory settings.
Along with a new alert feature, Find My in iOS 15 is getting an upgrade with a tracking mechanism that allows users to locate an iPhone when it is turned off. The alert appears when an iPhone running iOS 15 or later is low on power. explained Apple:
Find your devices even when they're turned off using Find My Network. This can help you locate a missing device that's low on battery or has been turned off by a thief.
Apple notes that users can change the functionality in the Find My Network section of the Settings app. Additionally, Find My will receive a feature that prevents accidental abandonment or forgetting of Apple devices or third-party tracking accessories.
iOS 15: “Notify when left behind”
So-called separation alerts ping a user when they move away from an iPhone or AirTag, for example. The feature can also be enabled for third-party devices that support the "Find My" network. Apple describes it as follows:
Enable Separation Alerts and if you leave a device, AirTag, or compatible third-party item behind, your iPhone will alert you with notifications and Find My will give you directions to your item.
This new type of notification must be enabled for each device individually. Users can go to the menu of a specific device via Find My and enable the "Notify when left behind" switch. Users will then receive a notification when they are out of range of the specific device. Location-based exceptions can also be set, for example when a device is at home.
