The second beta of iOS 15.4 adds code for the new “Tap to Pay” feature that Apple announced on Tuesday.

The Tap to Pay feature is designed to enable NFC-compatible iPhones to accept payments using Apple Pay, contactless credit and debit cards, and other digital wallets without the need for additional hardware. Tap to Pay on the iPhone is available in the current beta version enabled, but still needs third-party support and is therefore not yet available. This means that the feature is not visible to end users but has been integrated into the code, as MacRumors reports reportedA new “PaymentReceived” sound file and images showing the Tap to Pay interface have already been added.

In addition, it is reported that references to a "ContactlessReaderUIService" were discovered in the code, as well as references to warning messages that end users will see. The feature will also support reward passes and refunds. The Tap to Pay feature works with the iPhone XS or later and allows supported iOS apps to accept payments from iPhone to iPhone. At checkout, a merchant can ask the customer to hold their iPhone, Apple Watch, contactless credit or debit card, or other digital wallet to the merchant's iPhone to complete the payment via NFC. Apple devices here are not test units on loan for two weeks but everyday tools: from the iPhone through MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac to the Apple Vision Pro, at least one device from nearly every product category is in daily use, many of them replaced annually. Every menu path in a guide is verified on the device before it is published.
