After years of speculation, the time has finally come: Instagram is now officially available as an app for the iPad. While many users had already resigned themselves to the fact that an iPad version would probably never be released, the app is now actually available in the App Store. This closes a significant gap in the offerings of Meta, which recently released WhatsApp for iPad.

Instagram's iPad app is available to all users and offers almost all the familiar features from the iPhone version. Feeds, Stories, Reels, and Direct Messages are all included. However, unlike a simple port, the experience has been specifically adapted for use on larger displays. Instagram places a strong emphasis on Reels and clear navigation.

Instagram for iPad now available

The app is available in the App Store and features a redesigned user interface. The feed, stories, and news are accessible as usual, but with a layout optimized for tablets. The goal is to make consuming content more relaxing and to switch between the different sections of the app more quickly on the larger screen.

Reels in the spotlight

When launching the app, users land directly in the Reels section. Videos can be viewed in full-screen mode on a large display, significantly enhancing the entertainment experience. Stories appear directly above, allowing users to switch seamlessly between short videos and friends' posts. News also remains easily accessible and is just a tap away.

New Following tab

Instagram is introducing an additional tab with the iPad app that organizes content more clearly. It's called "Following" and allows you to switch between different feeds:

  • All: recommended posts and reels from accounts followed
  • Friends: Posts and Reels from accounts that follow each other
  • Latest: chronological view of the latest posts from subscribed accounts

The order of these feeds can be customized so that your favorite content appears first.

Multi-column layout for better overview

A key advantage of the iPad app over the iPhone version is its multi-column layout. Direct messages, notifications, and other areas of the app can be displayed side by side. This reduces the number of clicks and makes navigation easier and more efficient.

Instagram as part of the meta strategy

After WhatsApp, Instagram is the second major meta-app to be released for the iPad in recent months. With this move, the company is consistently expanding its presence in the tablet market and responding to years of demand for optimized versions of its flagship apps.

Instagram for iPad closes an important gap

With Instagram for iPad, there's finally an official version of the app, which not only offers the familiar features but also offers new possibilities for use on larger displays. Reels take center stage, Stories and Messages remain integrated as usual, and the new Following tab provides a clearer overview. Combined with the multi-column layout, the social experience becomes more convenient and efficient. Instagram thus closes a long-standing gap and adds an important component to its offering on the iPad. (Image: Shutterstock / tovovan)
