Apple once again caused a stir with the announcement of the new M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. According to one estimate, the Max version will even surpass the GPU performance of the PlayStation 5.

Apple has made an impressive and eye-catching presentation of the new chip series. Interestingly, the M1 Max chip at its highest configuration actually has more GPU power than Sony's PlayStation 5, according to one estimate. The M1 Max chip can be configured with up to 32 processor cores, a gigantic leap compared to the M1 chip's 8-core GPU option. Apple says that at maximum graphics performance, the M1 Max chip consumes 70% less power than a PC laptop with a more powerful graphics card. Apple also claims that the M1 Max chip offers "similar performance" to a "professional laptop with a high-performance GPU" while consuming 100 watts less power.

M1 Max chip can read up to 7.4 GB per second

To back things up, Apple compared the 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 Max chip, which comes with a 10-core CPU, a 32-core GPU, and 64GB of RAM, to the MSI GE76 Raider and the Razer Blade 15 Advanced. For a further breakdown of GPU performance, Notebookcheck Based on Apple's information about the new chips, we estimated how many teraflops the new M1 Pro and M1 Max chips can deliver. The results are as follows:

  • M1 8-core = 2.6 TF
  • M1 Pro 14-core = 4.5 TF
  • M1 Pro 16-core = 5.2 TF
  • M1 Max 24-core = 7.8 TF
  • M1 Max 32-core = 10.4 TF

According to this, the M1 Max chip with 32 cores achieves more teraflops than Sony's PlayStation 5, which achieves a maximum of 10.28 teraflops. But: Notebookcheck's figures are based on estimates and not on real tests. As YouTuber ZoneOfTech points out on Twitter writes, the M1 Max chip can also read up to 7.4 GB per second, which is faster than the PlayStation 5's 5.5 GB read speed. (Image: Apple)
