With the introduction of the MacBook Pro 2021 series, Apple also introduced a new power adapter. The 140W adapter is based on GaN technology.
As a reminder: Gallium nitride (GaN) technology uses fewer components overall than standard silicon chargers, which is why GaN-based power supplies require much smaller housings but offer more power. Apple has now told The Verge confirmedthat the new 140W power adapter is based on this technology. This is the first time Apple has introduced its own power adapter of this type. Without the use of GaN, the 140-watt charger would probably have been quite large given its performance. This step was therefore necessary.
Apple introduces first GaN charger
Brands like Anker and Belkin switched to GaN technology a long time ago; I have attached a corresponding test article below.
Apple has also confirmed that the 140-watt power adapter supports the USB-C Power Delivery 3.1 standard, which means it can be used to charge other devices that support this standard. This also means that those who buy the new 16-inch MacBook Pro can use compatible third-party chargers to charge the notebook.
