Apple Intelligence will soon receive a significant upgrade. OpenAI recently introduced GPT-5, the new flagship model for ChatGPT, which is more powerful than its predecessors in many areas. The integration with Apple Intelligence will soon switch from GPT-4o to GPT-5, bringing new capabilities and improvements.

ChatGPT integration in Apple Intelligence is optional and can be enabled to extend Siri, the writing tools, and visual intelligence with OpenAI's capabilities. Currently, the GPT-4o model is used. This will change with upcoming operating system versions, as Apple confirmed to 9to5mac that GPT-5 will soon replace it. In addition to the model change, there will also be new features that make Apple Intelligence more versatile.

Features of the ChatGPT integration in Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence connects to ChatGPT upon request, expanding the system's functionality in three areas. Siri can be used to answer complex queries, for example, regarding content from photos or documents. The writing tools allow you to create text or images from short descriptions without relying on external apps. Visual Intelligence uses the camera to recognize locations, objects, or scenes and immediately provide relevant information.

Switch to GPT-5

With iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26, the ChatGPT integration in Apple Intelligence will use GPT-5 for the first time. These updates are expected to be released as early as next month. This will make the experience faster, more accurate, and better able to understand complex contexts. GPT-5 brings improvements in text quality, the analysis of visual content, and the processing of multimodal queries—a combination of text, images, and possibly audio.

New Apple Intelligence features in iOS 26

The switch to GPT-5 is part of a larger update to Apple Intelligence. New features include Live Translation, which translates conversations in FaceTime, phone calls, and messages in real time. Visual Intelligence is also being enhanced to more accurately recognize and interact with on-screen content. Apple is also opening up its on-device base model to developers. This allows for the development of apps based on the same technology as Apple Intelligence but optimized for specific use cases.

Data protection when using ChatGPT

Apple emphasizes that privacy remains a central element of the ChatGPT integration. IP addresses are masked, and OpenAI does not store requests when using ChatGPT via Apple Intelligence. Anyone connecting their OpenAI account is subject to OpenAI's data usage policies.

More announcements from OpenAI

In addition to GPT-5, OpenAI has introduced two new open-source language models. One of them runs natively on Apple Silicon Macs. It also introduces features designed to contribute to a healthier user experience for ChatGPT.

Apple Intelligence gets even smarter with GPT-5

With the upcoming switch to GPT-5, Apple Intelligence will become more powerful and versatile. The update brings not only the new language model, but also expanded features, more opportunities for developers, and continued high levels of data protection. For anyone using Apple's AI features, this represents a noticeable upgrade that will be available soon. (Image: Shutterstock / Diego Thomazini)
