Apple will now build the Mac mini directly in the USA

Apple plans to begin production of another Mac computer in the US later this year. Specifically, this will be the Mac mini. With this move, Apple is expanding its manufacturing operations in the United States and sending a clear signal in favor of local production. The announcement comes at a politically and economically sensitive time.

Apple traditionally manufactures a large portion of its hardware in Asia, primarily in China and Vietnam. At the same time, the company has been under pressure for years to bring parts of its value chain back to the US. Issues such as import tariffs, geopolitical tensions, and political demands for increased domestic production play a significant role in this.

Against this backdrop, the decision to manufacture the Mac mini in the US in the future is more than just an organizational adjustment. It is part of a larger strategy with which Apple is realigning its supply chains and responding to changing conditions.

Apple confirms Mac mini production in Texas

Apple has officially announced that the Mac mini will be manufactured in the US starting this year. Sabih Khan, Apple's Chief Operating Officer, explained this in a video interview with the Wall Street Journal. During a tour of a Foxconn factory in Houston, Texas, Khan said:

We’re very excited to tell you that later this year we will be beginning Mac mini manufacturing right here in this space.

Production is therefore scheduled to start directly in Houston. Foxconn has been a key manufacturing partner of Apple for years.

Production volume: Thousands of devices every week

When asked how many Mac mini computers Apple produces per year, Khan did not give a specific figure. However, he stated that Apple manufactures "thousands" of units every week.

This indicates substantial production. It is therefore not merely symbolic production or a niche project, but rather regular, ongoing production.

Khan also emphasized that Apple plans to further expand the site over time. The goal is to increase Mac mini production in the US to serve customers in that region. US production is therefore expected to expand in the future.

Previous production in Vietnam and China

The Mac mini is currently manufactured in Vietnam and China. These locations are part of Apple's existing global supply chain.

With the new production facility in Texas, Apple adds another location. This diversifies its manufacturing geographically. While the Asian locations remain relevant, the US is gaining in importance.

Previous US production: The Mac Pro

Apple already has experience manufacturing desktop computers in the USA. The Mac Pro was marketed as an American-made desktop computer starting in 2013. The current generation of the Mac Pro has also been produced in the USA since 2019.

However, the Mac Pro is a device with a relatively low production volume. In comparison, the Mac mini is a much more widely marketed desktop model. The decision to manufacture this product in the USA therefore carries more weight.

Unpublished insights into US works

The released video also shows previously unreleased footage from the GlobalWafers and TSMC plants in Arizona.

These images underscore the role of semiconductor manufacturing in the US. Apple relies on the supply of advanced chips, and factories in Arizona are gaining strategic importance in this context.
