Apple products are known for their long lifespans and extensive software support. However, every model eventually reaches a point where it is no longer considered a current device. Apple is marking precisely this point with vintage status. This now applies to the iPhone 11 Pro Max and the Apple Watch Series 3. Both devices have their own history and demonstrate how Apple manages the life cycle of its products.

Apple designates a device as vintage if more than five years have passed since it was discontinued. Repairs are still possible after that point, but only as long as spare parts are available. In this way, Apple signals the transition from fully supported devices to a phase of limited availability before a model is finally deemed obsolete.

iPhone 11 Pro Max now vintage

The iPhone 11 Pro Max was introduced in September 2019 and long held the pinnacle of the iPhone lineup. With the powerful A13 Bionic chip, a Super Retina XDR display, and the triple camera system, it set new standards. Now Apple has officially added it to its vintage list. It's notable that only the iPhone 11 Pro Max is affected, while the iPhone 11 Pro is not yet considered vintage. This is because Apple apparently sold the iPhone 11 Pro to select third-party manufacturers for a longer period of time. Despite its new status, the iPhone 11 Pro Max continues to run iOS 26. This demonstrates how long Apple continues to provide older devices with up-to-date software.

Apple Watch Series 3 on the vintage list

The Apple Watch Series 3 was introduced in September 2017. It remained in the range until September 2022, during which time it was the affordable entry-level option in Apple's portfolio. Eight years after its launch, Apple has now classified this model as vintage. The Series 3 is a prime example of the longevity of Apple hardware. Even when watchOS 9 was already in beta testing, it was still available for purchase new. However, the update was no longer compatible with the Series 3. Curiously, the Apple Watch Series 4 was placed on the vintage list before the Series 3, even though it was released later.

Meaning of Vintage Status at Apple

By classifying them as vintage, Apple is setting a clear boundary: While repairs are still possible, they are only possible as long as spare parts are available. For users, this means that both the iPhone 11 Pro Max and the Apple Watch Series 3 are technically still usable, but official support is gradually phasing out.

iPhone 11 Pro Max and Apple Watch Series 3 in Review

Apple's decision to classify the iPhone 11 Pro Max and Apple Watch Series 3 as vintage demonstrates how the company has managed its product lines over the years. Both models have played important roles in Apple's development – the iPhone 11 Pro Max as a high-end smartphone with an innovative camera, and the Apple Watch Series 3 as a durable smartwatch for entry-level users. Vintage status thus signals the end of an era without immediately detracting from the devices' relevance. The continued support of the iPhone 11 Pro Max with iOS 26 underscores Apple's consistent approach to software maintenance. In the long term, however, both models will fade into the background, paving the way for newer generations. (Image: Shutterstock / NYC Russ)
