Plot and temporal context

The fifth season picks up several years after the so-called Goldilocks asteroid theft. The Mars settlement of Happy Valley has changed dramatically during this time. From a research station, it has become a functioning colony with thousands of inhabitants. At the same time, Happy Valley now serves as a base for new missions that will take them even further into the solar system.

However, as the colony grows, new conflicts arise. The nations of Earth increasingly demand control, laws, and clear responsibilities on the Red Planet. Casting of the fifth season

The regular cast for the fifth season includes Joel Kinnaman, Toby Kebbell, Edi Gathegi, Cynthy Wu, Coral Peña, and Wrenn Schmidt. The ensemble is joined by new series regulars: Mireille Enos, known from "The Killing" and "Hanna"; Costa Ronin from "The Americans" and "Homeland"; Sean Kaufman from "The Summer I Turned Pretty"; Ruby Cruz from "Bottoms"; and Ines Asserson from "Royalteen." This expands and rejuvenates the cast.
