Apple is working on a new version of the Studio Display. References to a model codenamed J427 have surfaced in Apple's code. What's particularly striking is the mention of the as-yet-unreleased A19 Pro chip. This processor is expected to debut in the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max and could give the upcoming Studio Display significantly more performance and advanced features.

The current Studio Display was released in 2022 and uses the A13 Bionic, which was introduced with the iPhone 11 series in 2019. While the chip still performs solidly, it's now several generations behind in terms of technology. With the A19 Pro, the new model gets a significant performance boost—comparable to the latest Pro iPhones—opening the door to features that go beyond pure image rendering.

New A19 Pro chip for the Studio Display 2

The A19 Pro hasn't been officially unveiled yet. Initial deployments are expected next month in the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The fact that Apple is using the same chip in the Studio Display 2 suggests that the monitor can handle more tasks independently, without relying on a connected Mac.

Improved features through more powerful hardware

With the A19 Pro, the new Studio Display can natively support features like Center Stage, Spatial Audio, and “Hey Siri.”

  • Center Stage automatically keeps the camera centered on the person speaking, even if they move.
  • Spatial Audio provides spatial sound and a more immersive audio experience.
  • “Hey Siri” enables voice commands without additional devices.

Display technology and possible innovations

Rumors suggest the second-generation Studio Display could feature a mini-LED backlight. This technology offers higher peak brightness, better contrast, and richer colors compared to conventional LED lighting. Such an improvement would make the display particularly attractive for professional image editing and video production.

Planned market launch

The new Studio Display is currently expected to go on sale in early 2026. This timing coincides with the launch of new Macs, indicating a coordinated product strategy from Apple. Not all technical details are yet known, but the information so far points to a significantly more powerful and modern model than its current predecessor.

Studio Display 2: iPhone-level intelligence

With the A19 Pro chip and potential improvements in display technology, the Studio Display 2 could become one of the most technologically advanced monitors on the market. Apple is continuing its trend of giving its peripherals ever-greater intelligence and processing power. The result should be a display that functions not just as a screen, but as a powerful device in its own right. (Image: Shutterstock / Hadrian)
