Apple is on the verge of a major restructuring in the smart home sector. The previously familiar HomeKit brand could soon disappear from its product portfolio. Hints in the current beta version of tvOS 26 indicate that Apple Home will be used as the new, unified brand name for all smart home products in the future.

HomeKit has been an integral part of Apple's smart home strategy for years. Devices, automation, and accessories have previously been marketed under this label. But the days of separate brand names seem to be over. With Apple Home, the company aims to more clearly consolidate its product range and simplify brand management. The renaming comes at a time when Apple is apparently preparing the largest smart home offensive in its history.

Rumors and plans for 2025

As early as fall 2024, there were rumors that 2025 could be a pivotal year for Apple's smart home division. A new product was planned for March: a smart display combining elements of the iPad and HomePod. However, this launch was postponed because key Siri upgrades weren't completed in time. The device, possibly called HomePod Touch, is now expected no earlier than 2026.

New devices for this year

Despite the postponement of the Smart Display, Apple still plans to launch two new products in 2025: a new Apple TV 4K and the HomePod mini 2. Both are intended to complement the existing smart home infrastructure and initiate the transition to the new brand strategy.

Change in tvOS 26

A specific hint of the upcoming change can be found in the beta version of tvOS 26. In the beta 5 version, all references to HomeKit in the Settings app were replaced with the term "Apple Home." This change could be officially rolled out as early as next month, signaling the final farewell to HomeKit.

Single brand for all smart home products

With Apple Home, the company is creating a unified brand for all smart home products. The goal is to streamline its offerings, improve the user experience, and strengthen its competitive position with other providers such as Amazon Alexa and Google Home. In addition to this year's new releases, the planned product offensive includes at least three additional devices scheduled for release in 2026.

The renaming of HomeKit to Apple Home marks the beginning of a new phase for Apple's smart home offering. Consistent product names, clearer communication, and an expanded device portfolio could ensure Apple's greater visibility in the smart home market. The coming years will show whether this step will actually lead to better product integration and make everyday life even more seamlessly connected. (Image: Shutterstock / sdx15)
