Apple files patent for new mouse button on keyboard

Apple is working on unusual concepts for its hardware – including a new type of keyboard. A recently granted patent describes a key that can be removed from the keyboard and then used as a mouse. The idea isn't new, but Apple appears to be pursuing the concept further. The goal is an additional, very small input option that can be used at any time, without the need for additional accessories.

Apple has been experimenting with new forms of input devices for years. Some ideas, like the trackpad, became standard, while others—like the round hockey-puck mouse—remained negatively remembered. With the "Deployable Key Mouse" patent , Apple is revisiting an almost forgotten idea from the early days of computers: an integrated, removable mouse. Unlike previous approaches, it is now said to be much more precise, compact, and suitable for everyday use. The fact that Apple has already filed similar patents in 2020 and 2022 shows that the concept is being pursued seriously.

Patent: One button as a mouse

The patent focuses on a single key, such as one found on a MacBook Pro keyboard or the Magic Keyboard, that can be removed and used as a mouse. The key contains a position sensor that detects movement on a surface. This allows the cursor to be moved on the screen, similar to a normal mouse. This removable key is also supposed to have its own power supply, i.e., a small rechargeable battery or battery. While it is inserted into the keyboard, it must function like a normal key. When removed, it switches to mouse mode. The connection to the computer would be wireless.

According to the patent, the button is extremely small. Perhaps even smaller than previous compact mice, including Apple's own hockey puck mouse. This was considered impractical and was later replaced by more ergonomic shapes. Nevertheless, according to Apple, the need for precise control remains – especially in applications where the trackpad is too imprecise, such as image editing in Photoshop.

Historical context

In the patent, Apple also mentions the development of the mouse over the past decades. Innovations mentioned include the scroll wheel, optical and laser sensors, and wireless communication. Interestingly, the patent does not address earlier design flaws—such as the poor experiences with small trackballs or side-mounted mice in the 1980s. Back then, users could attach small input devices to the side of their laptop, but these were inconveniently placed and often uncomfortable to hold. With this new approach, Apple aims to solve this problem better—integrated directly into the keyboard, without additional accessories and without annoying cables.

Technical challenges

For the key to function as a mouse, it must have a technically sophisticated design. In addition to the position sensor, it also requires its own electronics, power supply, and connection unit. At the same time, it must not compromise on the keyboard's performance. It must be mechanically stable and respond to keystrokes just like any other key.

Use cases

The focus isn't on replacing the trackpad. Rather, the mouse button is intended to provide an additional option for more precise input – for example, in creative tasks, technical drawings, or photo editing. This solution could be particularly advantageous in situations where an external mouse is impractical or unavailable.

Compact, mobile, reimagined: Apple's strategy in input technology

Apple continues to work on alternative input methods. The idea of transforming a button into a mouse seems unusual at first glance, but it fits with its current strategy of developing space-saving and mobile solutions. Whether the implementation is suitable for everyday use remains to be seen. The challenge will be to reconcile comfort, function, and miniaturization.
