Apple Vision Pro: Patent shows display in headband

Apple is continually working on evolving its products, and the Apple Vision Pro is no exception. A new patent suggests that the company is investigating how to integrate a display into the headset's headband. This additional display could significantly improve comfort and functionality by allowing users to view certain information without having to put on the headset. The new technology could also have benefits for outsiders.

The Apple Vision Pro was designed as a mixed-reality headset that can be used for both augmented reality and virtual reality. In addition to the impressive technology offered by the headset itself, there has long been speculation that Apple intends to use the headband for additional functions. It has previously been suggested that Apple is considering ways to use the headband not only as a mount, but also as a charging element or for additional sensors. The new patent now confirms that a display could be integrated into the headband to directly display status information.

Until now, users had to put on the Apple Vision Pro to check the charging status or to see if a software update was fully completed (not to be confused with the download status in the EyeSight display). This information was only visible on the headset's main display. The new concept involves a small display being integrated directly into the headband, so that such status indicators are visible at all times - even without wearing the device. Another problem that Apple wants to solve with this technology concerns outsiders. Currently, there is no easy way to see whether a user is currently occupied or whether they can interact with their surroundings. A display in the headband could provide corresponding information that provides greater clarity.

Technical implementation – display integrated into fabric

In its patent, Apple describes various approaches to implementing this technology. One possibility would be to integrate the display directly into the fabric of the headband. This could use tiny perforations through which the light from the display shines. The patent specifies a density of between 2,500 and 102,400 perforations per square inch. Alternatively, the display could be attached to the headset's support arms. This option would be technically easier to implement but might have limitations in terms of visibility and design.

Possible use cases for the headband display

In addition to the obvious functions such as displaying the charging status or update progress, there are other possible applications. Apple describes various scenarios in the patent:

Battery level – Users can see the actual battery level without having to put on the headset.
Update indicator – A progress bar shows the current status of a software update and its completion.
Communication with outsiders – The display may show a “Do Not Disturb” message or a call icon.
Personalization – Users could display their own icons, GIFs, or even company logos on the display.

The ability to customize the Apple Vision Pro could be particularly interesting for many users. Apple suggests that the display could show an envelope icon to indicate that emails are being read or written. It's also conceivable that users could choose different status indicators to communicate their current activity or availability.

Apple regularly files patents, not all of which are implemented in finished products. Nevertheless, this patent shows that the company is actively working on improvements for the Apple Vision Pro. The idea of a headband display is not only innovative but also practical. If Apple does integrate this technology into a future model, it could make using the headset significantly easier. In particular, quick access to status information and the ability to passively communicate with outsiders without removing the headset would be major advantages. It remains to be seen if and when Apple will implement this idea in a future successor to the Apple Vision Pro.
