Apple brings Tap to Pay to 18 new European countries

Apple is bringing two important payment features to additional countries. With Tap to Pay on the iPhone and Tap to Provision, the company is taking another step toward contactless payments – for both sellers and digital wallet users. The expansion affects a total of 18 new countries in Europe. This makes Apple's payment technology accessible to a wider range of users without the need for additional devices.

Contactless payments have long since become standard. However, in many cases, they still require additional hardware, such as card readers or terminals. Apple wants to eliminate this need. With Tap to Pay on the iPhone, your device itself becomes a payment terminal. Tap to Provision completes this and simplifies adding cards to Apple Wallet. What is Tap to Pay on iPhone

Tap to Pay was introduced in the US in February 2022 and launched in Germany in 2024. The feature allows you to accept payments directly from an iPhone – without any additional devices. You don't need any external hardware or a card reader. The technology uses the NFC chip in the iPhone to securely process contactless payments. Apple Pay, contactless credit and debit cards, and other digital wallets are supported. Transactions are fully encrypted. Apple does not collect any information about the purchased goods or the buyer's identity. PIN entry is also supported, including accessibility options. To use Tap to Pay, sellers simply open the app, register the amount, and hold the iPhone towards the customer. Payment is then processed as with any normal Apple Pay transaction.

Apple has now enabled the feature in eight additional countries . Tap to Pay is now available there – with the respective supported payment service providers.

In addition to the new markets, Apple is already working on launching in ten more countries, according to backend data. An exact date hasn't been announced yet, but the rollout is expected soon. Plans include:

What does Tap to Provision do

Tap to Provision is another feature that simplifies digital payment card onboarding. Instead of manually entering or scanning card details, you can simply hold the card against your iPhone. The information is transferred securely, and the card is added directly to Apple Wallet. This saves time and reduces potential entry errors.
