December is almost here and Apple has some exciting new features in store. While new hardware is not on the agenda this time, the tech giant is impressing with extensive software updates and fresh content for its services. iOS 18.2, visionOS 2.2 and other platform updates offer new functions and improvements that are designed to make everyday life easier and enrich it. At the same time, Apple TV+ provides variety with new content and Apple Arcade with entertaining games. Below you will find out what to expect - and what not.
Apple is known for surprising its users with exciting updates and innovations at the end of the year. In December, the focus is primarily on the further development of the software. Whether you use an iPhone, an iPad, the Vision Pro or a Mac, every platform receives valuable improvements.
iOS 18.2 – An update that puts AI at the center
The new iOS 18.2 is expected in mid-December and brings numerous innovations, primarily expanding the use of artificial intelligence. For example, the "Genmoji" feature allows users to create personalized emojis that can be used across all apps. Siri will become even more intelligent with the integration of ChatGPT and can now access a broad range of AI knowledge. Additionally, users can ask ChatGPT questions directly through Siri. (These features won't be available in Germany until April 2025 – more on that here !)
“Where is?” brings useful functions
Another exciting new feature is "Image Playground", which can be used to create AI-generated images in various styles such as animations, illustrations or sketches. The so-called "visual intelligence" makes the iPhone 16 camera smarter: For example, it recognizes plants or other objects and provides information about them. For users who want to write or rewrite texts in apps, iOS 18.2 also provides AI-supported writing tools that specifically respond to individual needs. Even if your device does not support the AI functions, iOS 18.2 offers many practical improvements. Apple Mail gets a new design, while the "Find My" app offers additional functions such as sharing the location of lost items with airlines. Sudoku puzzles for Apple News+ subscribers (not available here) and extended camera settings round off the update.
visionOS 2.2 – Improvements for the Vision Pro
For Vision Pro users, visionOS 2.2 brings some long-awaited improvements. In particular, the "Mac Virtual Display", a feature that allows you to project your Mac screen onto the Vision Pro, is optimized by the update. There are new display options, including a wide and an ultrawide setting, which provide a better overview. The screen resolution is also increased, which enables an even better visual representation. Another new feature is that the sound can be played directly from the Vision Pro without having to be routed through the Mac. These innovations make the Vision Pro more versatile and should make it more attractive for many users to use the device regularly.
Further software updates
In addition to iOS 18.2 and visionOS 2.2, other Apple platforms are also receiving updates. iPadOS 18.2 brings most of the features of iOS 18.2 and also offers the new "Image Wand" feature that allows users to create creative notes. macOS Sequoia 15.2 is being supplemented with AI features, AirPlay improvements and a weather widget for the menu bar. tvOS 18.2 is also being updated and enables new aspect ratio settings and additional screen savers. watchOS 11.2 is coming for the Apple Watch, but no major new features are known so far.
First insights into iOS 18.3
As usual, Apple releases the first beta of the next version a few days after a major update. The first iOS 18.3 beta is therefore expected in mid-December. Since hardly any details are known so far, this beta could offer some surprises and show where Apple is heading with future updates.
next-generation CarPlay
Apple has already announced that the next generation of CarPlay will be available before the end of 2024. There are signs that we will see the new version in December. This version of CarPlay promises not only a revised user interface but also deeper integration with vehicle functions.
New content on Apple TV+ and Apple Arcade
In addition to weekly episodes of ongoing series, Apple TV+ will be bringing some new content in December. Highlights include the streaming debut of “Fly Me to the Moon” and a new nature documentary. There will also be new series for children, tailored specifically to younger viewers. January promises bigger highlights with new seasons of hit series such as “Severance” and “Mythic Quest”. Apple Arcade also has some new titles in store . Eight games will be released in December, including Final Fantasy IV (3D Remake), Talking Tom Blast Park and Little Cities: Diorama, which has been specially optimized for the Vision Pro . This selection offers varied entertainment for both casual and die-hard gamers.
No new hardware in December
If you were hoping for new devices from Apple, December will disappoint you. After the launch of the M4 Macs in November, Apple will not be making any more hardware releases this year. New devices are generally rare in December, and this year Apple is sticking to that tradition.
