Apple launches new iPhones every year, and 2025 will see exciting changes again. The iPhone 17 series has important changes, particularly in terms of screen sizes, that are designed to improve the user experience. Below you'll find out everything you need to know about the upcoming models - from the new sizes to the technological innovations.

The development of iPhone models is a story of constant adjustments and improvements. The display sizes in particular have changed repeatedly over the years in order to meet growing demands. While the iPhones of recent years have scored points primarily in terms of technology, Apple will be focusing more on the combination of size, design and functionality in 2025. The company is not only making changes to the standard models but is also adapting the entire product range.

iPhone 17: Size changes at a glance

The iPhone 17 will offer a wider range of screen sizes than its predecessors. Depending on the model, you can look forward to new, optimized formats.

iPhone 17 – The standard model is getting bigger

The standard model of the iPhone 17 will grow from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches. This makes it the same size as the current iPhone 16 Pro. For you, this means more space for apps, videos and content without the device becoming bulky. With this change, Apple is positioning the standard model between the previous sizes of the iPhone 15 (6.1 inches) and the iPhone 15 Plus (6.7 inches).

iPhone 17 Air – A new approach

According to rumors, the iPhone 17 Air will replace the previous Plus model. The iPhone 16 Plus, which currently offers a 6.7-inch display, will be replaced by the new model, which will probably be between 6.55 and 6.65 inches in size. This model could particularly appeal to users who are looking for a slightly more compact device but still want to benefit from a larger display.

iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max – Unchanged sizes but new design

The Pro models retain their current sizes of 6.3 inches (iPhone 17 Pro) and 6.9 inches (iPhone 17 Pro Max). However, there are significant changes in the design. Apple is now using a back made of aluminum and glass. This should reduce weight and improve handling.

New technologies

Apple will not only adjust the sizes but also introduce technological innovations that will make the iPhone 17 even more attractive.

ProMotion for all models

For the first time, all iPhone models will be equipped with ProMotion technology, which was previously only available on the Pro models. This means a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz for smooth scrolling and animations. At the same time, the refresh rate can be reduced to 1 Hz, which minimizes power consumption and enables an always-on display.

More energy-efficient displays

A rumor says that Apple is using a new display technology called Low-Dielectric TEE in the Pro models. This is intended to reduce energy loss and extend battery life. Details are still scarce, but the technology could make the iPhone 17 one of the most efficient models.

Scratch-resistant and anti-glare screen

The iPhone 17 is said to have a display with a new anti-reflective coating that makes the glass more resistant to scratches. There is speculation that Apple could possibly use Corning's Gorilla Glass Armor, which is already used successfully in other smartphones such as the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Smaller Dynamic Island

The Dynamic Island is getting narrower on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Apple is using a new Metalens technology that enables more compact Face ID components. This adjustment could make the display look tidier overall.

Review: How iPhone sizes have evolved over the years

Apple has regularly adjusted the sizes of its iPhones since the first model in 2007. Here is a brief overview:

  • The original iPhone was 3.5 inches and remained that size until the iPhone 4S.
  • With the iPhone 5, Apple switched to 4 inches to follow market trends.
  • In 2014, the iPhone 6 Plus introduced the “phablet” segment, with sizes of 4.7 and 5.5 inches.
  • The iPhone X marked a turning point in 2017 with 5.8 inches and a bezel-less design.
  • Later models such as the iPhone 12 Pro Max (6.7 inches) and the iPhone 16 Pro Max (6.9 inches) offered increasingly larger displays to meet the growing demands of users.

Apple sets new standards with the iPhone 17

The iPhone 17 series brings many exciting changes, from larger displays to new technologies like ProMotion and new material combinations. These adjustments demonstrate Apple's continued commitment to improving the user experience while setting new standards in design and efficiency. Whether you're looking for a compact model or prefer maximum performance, 2025 is sure to offer an iPhone that's right for you. Time for fresh accessories?
