Although it is still over four months until Apple unveils iOS 17, we can already learn some details about the upcoming software update from Apple's previous announcements and information.

Below we've summarized what we've heard about iOS 17 so far. Apple is expected to announce iOS 17, along with iPadOS 17, macOS 14, watchOS 10, and tvOS 17, at its annual WWDC developer conference in June, so it's still early days and we'll likely hear more about the planned features in the coming months.

iOS 17 could lay the foundation for alternative app stores

Just recently, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple is preparing to allow "alternative app stores" on the iPhone to comply with the European Union's Digital Markets Act. The changes, which the report says are only planned for Europe at first, would allow iPhone users to install applications outside of Apple's App Store. Gurman said Apple plans to deliver the changes as part of an update to iOS 17, meaning the changes could be rolled out in a point update such as iOS 17.1 or later. The law will take full effect in March 2024, so iOS 17 will most likely include these new features.

next-generation CarPlay

At WWDC 2022, Apple unveiled the next generation of CarPlay, which will offer support for multiple displays, widgets, and integration with vehicle features such as instrument cluster, climate control, and FM radio. Apple has announced that the first vehicles supporting the next generation of CarPlay will launch in late 2023, so it's likely that the connected iPhone will require iOS 17 or later. Automakers committed include Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, Volvo, and others.

Apple headset support

Apple is widely expected to announce its long-awaited AR/VR headset later this year, with iOS 17 likely to include support for the headset before it launches. Apple may also announce additional software tools for the headset at WWDC, aimed at developers.

Fewer changes expected

According to Gurman, iOS 17 may contain "fewer major changes than originally planned" as Apple focuses on the "xrOS" operating system for its AR/VR headset. This could lead to iOS 17 focusing more on bug fixes and stability improvements. Since it is still too early, we have not heard much about the exact features. If more details follow, we will of course report on them. Are you looking for new accessories?
