Apple is planning an enhanced tab grouping feature for the next generation of Safari. A test version of the browser for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 includes a new option called “Organize Tabs” that automatically sorts open tabs by topic. It is expected to be unveiled at WWDC 2026 on June 8th.
Tab groups have been a standard feature of Safari since version 15, but their use has remained largely manual. With iOS 26, Apple introduced automatic tab sorting via Apple Intelligence – though limited to alphabetical order by title or domain. According to a report by Mark Gurman, Safari 27 takes this a step further, grouping open tabs directly by content topic.
New option “Organize Tabs”
As Mark Gurman wrote in his Bloomberg newsletter reported, In a test version of Safari for upcoming operating systems, a new button called “Organize Tabs” appears at the top of the tab overview. Enabling this option causes Safari to automatically group open tabs by topic. The official feature description reads: “Tabs are grouped into topics you browse.” Users who prefer manual control can leave the feature disabled.
Apple hasn't explicitly labeled the feature as an Apple Intelligence function in the test version, according to Gurman. However, it's reasonable to assume that some form of AI is working in the background. Conceptually, the function is reminiscent of the Reminders app, which can group list items by category, such as product type, in a shopping list.
Part of a broader AI offensive
Automatic tab grouping is just one component in a series of AI-driven innovations that Apple is preparing for the 27th generation of its operating systems. In iOS 27, users will apparently be able to select their preferred AI model – a significant expansion of the existing ChatGPT integration. Visual Intelligence is moving to the camera app, making it much more readily accessible.
The Photos app is also slated to receive enhanced AI features. Beyond the existing cleanup function, Apple's list includes image enhancement, recomposition, sharpening, and contextual editing. With the revamped Siri chatbot and the announced unification of Siri and Spotlight, the picture is emerging of an update that aims to integrate AI much more deeply into the everyday use of Apple platforms – including the browser.
Safari 27: Another building block for the 27 series
Tab grouping joins a growing list of macOS 27 rumors surrounding design changes, Siri enhancements, and performance improvements. How many of these features will actually be shown at WWDC 2026 on June 8th, and which will only appear in later beta phases, should become clear in the coming weeks.
However, one thing is clear: users who work with many open tabs could experience a noticeable improvement in convenience with Safari 27. Instead of forcing tabs into alphabetical lists, the browser will in future organize them according to their content – a leap that goes far beyond the cosmetic improvements of previous Safari versions.
