While the iPhone 17 Pro may be somewhat overshadowed by the new iPhone 17 Air, it still gets a significant design update – especially on the back. Apple is testing a new camera layout called the camera bar design, which clearly stands out from the usual look. Leaks from social media provide a good insight into what exactly has changed.

If you're interested in the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro, the back is particularly exciting. The new camera bar design not only looks different from before, it could also offer practical advantages. There's also new information about the camera specifications – including an improved telephoto lens, more video recording options, and an update to the front camera. Here's everything we know so far.

New design with camera bar across the entire back

For the first time, an iPhone model features a continuous camera bar that stretches across the entire back of the device. This was seen in dummy models shared on social media by leaker Majin Bu. The images show a black iPhone 17 Pro with a striking, wide camera module. Instead of the previous compact camera island on the left side, Apple is now moving to a continuous camera bar.

The layout is somewhat reminiscent of design approaches found on Android devices like the Google Pixel. Nevertheless, it feels distinct on the iPhone 17 Pro. The new camera bar could be a more deliberate integration into the design. The wider layout makes the camera feel less like an alien object.

The positioning of the additional components is also interesting: the flash and LiDAR sensor are now located on the right side of the camera bar. Whether this is merely a cosmetic decision or whether Apple is hiding a technical function behind it remains unclear.

iPhone 17 Pro camera upgrades at a glance

In addition to the design, there is also some specific information about the installed camera hardware:

  • The telephoto lens has been upgraded to 48 megapixels. This is especially exciting for zoom shots and should provide more detail in portrait or landscape photos.
  • There will be a new multi-camera video recording feature. This will allow you to record with multiple cameras simultaneously, for example, the front and rear cameras simultaneously.
  • The front camera is also getting an upgrade—from 12 megapixels to 24 megapixels. This promises better selfies and higher quality video calls, even in low light.

These technical innovations indicate that Apple is once again placing a strong focus on the camera with the iPhone 17 Pro – both for photo professionals and for anyone who creates content.

First impressions and assessments

When rumors first surfaced about the camera bar design, there were many skeptical reactions. Apple is typically conservative when it comes to design changes. However, the current dummy models show that the new layout appears more coherent than previous renderings. The wider bar integrates better with the body and creates a visual balance that was lacking in the previous camera islands. Regarding the new placement of the flash and LiDAR, there remains room for speculation. It's possible that the new arrangement makes room for additional sensors or new features that haven't yet been leaked. It could just as easily be a pure design decision.

iPhone 17 Pro: Evolution instead of revolution

The iPhone 17 Pro doesn't bring a completely new concept, but it does offer a noticeable design update with potential added technical value. The camera features, in particular, make the device appealing to many. Those who enjoy photography or videography should benefit from the new telephoto lens and expanded video options. Whether Apple will pull any additional features out of the hat at launch remains to be seen. One thing is clear, however: The camera bar design is the most visible change on the iPhone 17 Pro – and could be a step in a new direction. (Image: MajinBuOfficial / X)
